How do you drain the coolant overflow tank?

How do you drain the coolant overflow tank?
I need to relocate the overflow reservoir from the front of the engine bay over to the drivers side. Is it really necessary to drain the entire system in order to do this?
You only drain what's in the tank, not the whole system. Drain into a clean bowl (don't tell the wife) and re-use. You may want to lay down some rags in case of spillage.
