I was cruising at about 75 to 80 this weekend (Sunday) on the interstate when the first hood catch failed (the one released via the hood release in the car). The hood did not fly off because the second catch worked, but the hood did pop up a couple of inches (imagine pulling the hood release lever while at speed)--a bit of a shocker when it happened.

I am very confident the hood was closed well because the day before, Saturday morning, I slammed the hood pretty well as it was half opened (again, one of the two catches engaged) after the drive up on Friday night (speeds got a little higher than 80). I did not notice the hood partially opened Friday night, but it was dark.

I am wondering if the hood release had a partial failure twice over the weekend and will this increase in frequency.
Has anyone else has had a similar problem.
Any suggestions on a fix? (excluding adding hood pins)

I noticed the same thing one time. Got to work and the hood was popped open an inch or so. Not sure when it happened, or why. It only happened once, about a year ago.

I had mine get squirrelly at high speed once, which is precisely why I added hood pins. Plus they look cool.

seriously hood pins are probably the best solution. although you may need to adjust the hood catch.

Have you considered a new hood latch mechanism, this would be my first choice over hood pins?

I dont drive highway that often yet. But having a new fiberglass hood as soon as I commute to Tampa(1hr drive) I'll invest in some hood pins. Better safe then sorry

It's not that I don't want hood pins. Hood pins are the obvious solution. I am looking for the cause or possibly other solutions.

The wife did not respond favorably when I suggested we may be adding hood pins. My options may be adding hood pins or slowing down--Are any vendor of hood pins better than others? Is there a difference in types/styles of hood pins?

I do like the option of removing the hood as this also solves the problem of the engine heat affecting the air intake temperature.

The hood was flexing a bit (mentioned in other threads) and I guess the hook on the hood slipped off the first catch mechanism. I wonder if there is some minor adjustment to be made in that area?

I think I will also inquire about the latch mechanism as a warranty item--thanks for the idea ShowGT.

Wow, those are nice pins, Scram. Too bad I couldn't find any pics of them on a 'Stang on that site. Know of any? Looks like I'd have to cut a huge hole in the hood on each side. Or maybe I'm not seeing it right.

yeah, my hood corners start to lift after 80mph... it's a bit unsettling to say the least. i was running back from san diego (to los angeles), and noticed it around 90mph or so. after pulling over to check it out, everything looked fine. fully latched. i think the hood is lightweight, and the design causes the corners to lift slightly.

scary stuff.

i wasn't gonna do the hoodpins, but now i'm reconsidering.

Heat extractors might work, but I don't know if it might also turn the hood into a wing. lol

I've been thinking about hood-pins, but I've never seen my hood even shake when going even as fast as 120mph.

I'll definately get a set of pins when I finally get around to putting a ram-air hood on.

A guy in another forum had some installed, go to approximately post number 8 for close-up pictures of the latches and how the posts are attatched. Not sure if he ever posted wider shots of the hood...

A year or more ago, after driving back home 600 miles, I walked out the next day to find my hood popped. I have no idea how it popped unless it did it while driving home the night before. I never saw or heard it while driving. Luckily the second latch held. I have not had it happen again. I've driven the same 1200 mile round trip 3 times since. My only guess is that it did not get closed completely. I always double check now when closing the hood.
