Lightbulb Help with Gear Choice

I need to go down in gears and need some advice on which to go. I currently have 4.10's and they are too much.

I have a 4 speed AOD with transbrake, 302 stroker, Powerhouse turbo making about 620/650 to the wheels and a little over 800 to the crank.

I run MT Drag Slicks 28x10.5-15 and I'm shifting the car at 7200 rpm.

I'm thinking even 3.73's will be too much and probably need to go 3.55's. Thoughts please?

Thanks,

Mark

That's too low for the horsepower he has. He'll run out of gear on the topend. You can't use the OD in a race, you'll trash it.

I would say run the 1/4 with your new setup and then decide.

You could always TUB IT!

Now that would be bad!

I can attest for the amount of sickness ChevyKiller's ride possesses. I've seen it in person when it was Vortech blown! I could only imagine with a turbo!

As far as you gears, I agree with Cali HP, you should take it to the track first to see what RPM you are at when you cross the traps.

Well I know the 4.10's are too much so I'm going to stick the 3.73 in there for the test run at LACR on wednesday. You guys are right and gears are cheap so I'll give them a try. I race 1/8 a lot so I'm hoping to stick with the 3.73's.

BTW - could never bring myself to tub the car...lol

I agree on the run showing you. I can't wait to see the vids !!! I am rootin' for you!

Geeez..think how I feel. I Pro-Streeted TWO of my stangs. A 69 fastback and a 70 Mach. Cut them firewall to bumper & rocker to rocker. I should have been locked up. Still feel sick and then to have hacked them up and SOLD them...All the work gone and the cars never to be original....(sorry for the digress, you hit a sad nerve..)

Your car is a drive shaft away from being done.

Mine is coming along nicely. The only fitment issue withthe PH kit for me was my fluidyne radiator. The stock fan is too big so I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow to get a tarus fan and problem solved.

I'll have numbers and vids VERY soon.

Mark, if you typically run 1/8th mile, I'd suggest trying out the 4.10's first. I ran out of gear with the 4.10's at the 1000' mark. You'll get out of the hole much better and the transbrake will allow you to get the boost up...as opposed to using the gears for load and spooling quicker. I run 1/4 mile 95% of the time, so I needed the 55's for top end and load. 73's in my setup would only drop the rpm by 200 where the 55's drop it 500. I won't be running mine until next weekend. I just got it back today with the 10pt and will be putting the dash back in tomorrow.

The main 1/4 for me is FFW in a couple weeks. We talked about it today and I'm just going to put the 3.55's for FFW and then go back to the 4.10's for the 1/8. I only get to run 1/4 every couple months and run the 1/8 twice a week so the 4.10's will be fine. Just gearing up (pun -get it?) for FFW.

How is your transbrake working for you now? I was honestly suprised your 60' time was not better than before with the C4 and transbrake now. I was expecting high 1.3's - low 1.4's?

I'm still fumbling around and not at full boost. My Nexus gauges haven't worked yet and it's really irritating. Everything should be 100% come next weekend. Maybe I'm putting the cart before the carriage, but I'm expecting to knock a few tenths or so off my best. I still haven't left as hard as possible at a prepped track.

Mark, someone suggested this to me and you might consider it as well. Just buy a second locker and install a gear set on each. It should make for a fairly easy gear swap when going from 1/8 to 1/4 mike tracks.
