Stupid question but does the ambient temperature have any bearing on your ability to get a "chirp" in 2nd?

My GT used to do it consistently - then the tranny was replaced as per the TSB on the manual 5spd transmission issues.

Ever since with the new tranny I rarely get a chirp - but I'm invariably trying at the end of a hot day with ambient temperatures well into the mid to upper 90s and road surface temps likely well over 100.

Just making sure it isn't something the dealership did with the new tranny.

She still comes on strong, no bogging - the nose rises up sharply and she throws you back, just no "chirp" :(

Typically I do turn the AC off and T/C off and/or on (never used to matter before).

I won't even get into how some of you get a chirp in 3rd, I never have but then my GT is stock except for a Magnaflow catback.

Thanks,
Earl

I think it is the temp as you noted.

probably spinning still with no chirp, with the mickeys on the back of my car i get more of a scratch instead of a chirp

azoufan 6/22/05 06:40 PM

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday, but of course it was 114 degrees. :-D

I can get 3rd to chirp with no issues, but it is hotter than Hades here right now. All those magazine articles and people asking what temperature it was when comparing 1/4 mile times must be on to something here. When I first got the car and up until the last couple of weeks here, I could get 3rd to go even with the A/C and TC on. I'm banking on it being soooo hot.

I was going to take my car out last night and try again after it cooled down, but I dented the fender with my knee at the gas station, so I didn't feel I should be driving in my clumsy state. Perhaps I'll go out tonight and see.

Aha....the temp it must be then. Probably the temps here are why I never got a 3rd chirp too. heck I hardly ever used the defective heater even though I bought her in mid January.

I can attest, definitely temp related. Just went out to get some gear oil, ripped 2nd pretty hard. Could not do that earlier today when it was 113 degrees. Just shifted real hard.

That and I'm not exactly John Force. :-D

I've noticed with cars in the past, the newer the tires, the easier they make the "chirp" sound. After I spin them for a a few months, the sounds turn a "slide" or "scrape" instead of a chirp.

You live in AZ, and yet have a black on black car...

It gets hot as heck down here too (triple digits), but not as hot as where you live, and I would NEVER buy a black car...

Are you sure that it is not your clutch. I can see third gear, but come on with a good power shift even in the heat I still fishtail and get about 10 feet of rubber with the 1 - 2 shift. When it is hot you may loose about 10hp, but you should still be able to break it loose in 2nd. I had problems with the T3650 in my 01 GT and after they (the dealer) replaced it I felt the clutch was noticably weaker. I complained to them but they refuesed to replace it as it did work. If the clutch is weak it will slip before the tires do. How far up do you have to let the clutch pedal up before its fully engaged? I dont know if the 05s have an adjustment. Also you need to keep the engine in the power band so shift at 6000 rpm. Just food for thaught.

I posted on a couple of boards - alot of people are reporting the same thing - it isn't my clutch. 3000 miles, no burnouts, no racing - it doesn't exactly get babied but I do no power shifting or any other abusive actions - just the occassionaly fast acceleration (well ok, maybe not so occassional) :)

Like Sean, it gets HOT here and I do mean hot. Mine is black too - heck thats what dark window tint and AC's are for :)

Mine will chirp in 2nd. gear easily too, even with the TCS "on". It's in the mid 80's here regularly now. I just hit 6000 miles on the car but I have been pretty easy on it so far.

What size tires are you running? Since i put 285/40R18's on the back I can get a little sqwauk out of the back when I shift into second but no longer anything in 3rd. With factory tires I could lay a 20 ft patch when I shifted into second. I think I need to get 4.10 gears installed.

rony1976 6/23/05 08:27 AM

Adrenalin, how the heck do you lay a 20ft patch in second!?!?!?

porsche 6/23/05 08:30 AM

man, 1 to 2 i have to get off the gas to stop spinning 3 gear scratch like 5 feet
4 gear chip no problem (stock tires)

mustp51 6/23/05 09:51 AM

A lot depends on the road surface as well. Took my dad out for a ride on fathers day on some deserted roads where he lives. Was able to chirp 3rd and 4th on one road (5500-5700 shift point), scratch in 3rd, nada for 4th on a different one. Had to go down the first road on the way back and was able to do it again. Stock tires and gears. This was also the first time above 100mph :D Needless to say, the old-man was pretty impressed. As far as chirping 4th, so was I.

  How are you guys chirping 3rd or even 4th with stock tires and gears? I can break loose in 2nd, but not even a slight chirp in 3rd. Are you power shifting? I'm taking it to about 6000-6200 and shifting hard and fast. No power shift either. Is that my problem?

rony1976 6/23/05 01:48 PM

I think the trick is 4.10s. I can do 1st to 2nd, but that's about it
