General GT questions

Since my accident I have been thinking of what I am going to get either a GT or another V6. Keep in mind I was very happy with my V6 and the way it drove so the extra HP is not a big deciding factor. Basically I know the GT is a slightly better investment (though no new car is a all that good investment) then the V6, but I have some questions about the long term performance of the GT. If you could help me out here I would appreciate it.

1. How is the GT's gas mileage (running regular)? I don't drive very fast but my V6 was only getting 17 MPG most of the time which I suspect is due to the smaller engine trying to push a heavy car.

2. A lot of people seem to be having a front end clunking problem with their GT, I have not seen this on the V6's; so should I worry about having more defects with the GT?

Thanks for the help!

I average around 20 MPG with my GT, and average driving. On the highway doing about 75-80 MPH, I get around 25 MPG.
I haven't noticed any front end noise, I get the occasional rear end gear noise, but it isn't bad.
Personally, I like the look of the GT better, painted rockers, more aggesive front, dual exhaust, and big driving lights in the grill, but that is me, get what you want.
Hope this helps.

Definitely get the GT. You may think that the extra hp is no big deal until you have it . The beast inside the car will bring out the beast inside of you . As far as gas milage... not %100 sure, but around low 20-ish . Oh, and the front end clunking... no problems here .

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah the HP increase is tempting though I am still shaken up from the accident, so right now it's just the look of the car basically what you said the painted rockers, dual exhaust and nicer front end. I just don't know if I want the hassel of getting painted rockers and doing all my cosmetic mods again. We will see, talking with a real nice salesman and with my Xplan (also got my new one from another very nice guy!) I hope I can get the GT.

WOW! averaging 20 with mild driving that sound like me, I am liking this anyone else care to share their gas mileage?

My car has just over 1500 miles on it. I'm usually getting in the low 20's with a mix of city and highway driving. On a highway trip to visit family, I got just over 23 mpg and that was with less than 1000 miles on the odometer.

I'd be curious to know if a new CAI would improve mileage just a bit. I've read a few people claim that and I was wondering if others might chime in.

I thought about the V6 but I know in 5 years, I'd be kicking myself in the a$$ for not getting a real engine under the hood.

20+ is probabaly a fantasy for most.

I normally get around 15mpg normal driving around town/freeway etc..

On the highway on long trips cruising along at 70-80mph I get pretty good mileage but i dont recall what it is.

Even if it got 8mpg like my old chevelle it would be worth it.....

Get the GT... you wont be sorry.

I get about the same on my 05 GT, great mileage, go ahead and spoil yourself, buy the GT.

I usually average low 20's mostly interstate driving, 90%, 10% city. If I take a long road trip (200 miles) I'll get 26-27mpg doing 70mph on cruise control.

Ouch guy thats a bit harsh, I though about the same thing and now having to get another I am thinking about it again; but thats still a little harsh. Without the V6 our Mustangs would be long gone by now and I would rather see someone buy a V6 stang then some piece of s*%# honda Fit or Scion. Still I am hoping to get the GT it is a better buy no doubt.

Thats what I am leaning towards, just have to see what the payments work out to.

I've got as little as 11mpg around town and as much as 26mpg on freeway trips. Driving style will be the biggest factor.

I drive mine aggresively, but get about 17 - 19 average mpg....mostly city driving though. The front end clunk was mainly on the early model '05's due to poorly designed upper strut bearing/retainers and Ford has long since cured that issue...my '07 GT/CS has no front or rear end noise.

I'd get the GT over the V6 simply because that's what a Mustang is to me....inexpensive seat of the pants performance....I've had both and would not want to go back to the V6...(no offense) but other manufacturers do a better job with the V6 - since that is their leading engine platform - whereas the V6 in the Mustang is not. Glad to hear you made it through the accident OK and are able to purchase a new Mustang - whichever model you choose!

It's all about how you drive and the tune you have. I have seen as low as 15 in the city and as high as 19 in the city. I have ran several different tunes and had different results. My problem is that I can't keep my foot out of it. I would go with the GT if you can...thats just my opinion.

I average 18 mpg city/highway driving. I've never had below 17.5 mpg on a tank of gas and I got 26 mpg once.

Well I had a 2005 V6 and now a 2006 GT and can tell you I'm much happier with the GT. It's nice having the extra power all the time. And I'm getting about the same gas mileage. My insurance went up $5 a month. You can keep it stock with your full warrantee in effect and still be faster.

My .02 is, think ahout re-sale when the time comes. You want a V-8. Too many V-6's from rentals.

I drive 22 miles each way on the interstate at 75 to 80 MPH. I average 21 to 22MPG. Now on the back roads the MPG go way down because of the right foot going way down.

You won't regret getting the GT once your insurance goes down after the initial bump. I thought for a second about getting a V6 and doing the GT bodykit thing...in hindsight, I'm so glad I didn't.

My GT has ~7k on it now, and I get 19 in mixed city/highway keeping my foot out of it. It goes as low as 17 if I get too heavy, as high as 22 if I get open road. I've hit 29.9 (according to the computer) when using the cruise control for straight highway driving at 71 mph. I got 25.7 mpg two weeks ago on a 500 mile round trip averaging 80 on the highway. Synthetic oil and a dyno tune have helped get my mileage up as well.

As far as clunking or any other problem goes: problems happen. Maybe not to you or to your neighbor, but they do happen. No car is infallible. The question is, is the enjoyment or use you'd get out of it worth the possible (not probable) extra hassle?
