Gears or driveshaft?

What would be a better bang for the buck?

I am thinking of swapping my 3:31s to 3:73s. I don't really give a crap about fuel mileage.

Or would an AL drive shaft be a better buy? I'd like to do both but I can only mod as my budget allows.

thanks for your feedback

I did my gears first so when I added the drive shaft it was really hard to tell the difference. The main thing I noticed with the drive shaft was when coasting to a stop I had to use my brakes more because there was less drag on the drive train. Not much help I know just thought I'd through in my two cents.

K, thanks. At least that shows that the DS does have an effect.

If you don't care about mileage why not 4.10's? And gears are one of those "kick in the pants" mods where you instantly feel the difference either is a great choice!

I'm concerned more with traction issues. Whipples have great low end torque so I don't wanna be spinning all over the place!

Is the 3:31 a LS? If it is, since you had the SC, I'd go with a one piece DS. If not I'd go with a 3:55 LSD or 3:73. Too bad you can't do both, then you could change to a pinion flange and skip an adapter plate for the DS.

Not sure to be honest. Maybe someone else could chime in and answer that.

But you might make a good argument for me to just wait til I can get both.

I would go with the gears. 3:31's are pretty tall for any car. Those are fuel mileage gears. Going from 3:31 to 3:73 is like 3:55 going to 4:10. I think the 3:73 gears are a good choice.
BTW I love my aluminum driveshaft too.

well... I'm gonna say driveshaft.

Mainly because of this...

I've got 3.55s plus an AL Driveshaft and I'm pretty happy

I don't know for sure which year Ford started putting limited slip (trac-loc) rear ends in ALL V-8 Mustangs but they certainly have since 2005.

Oh, between those two mods I would go with the gears.
Just make sure you have a competent experienced (with setting up ring and pinion gears in 8.8 rear ends) mechanic do your gears for you...

Gears. I went 3.31 to 4.10 on my NA. I think 3.73's would be perfect for the Whipple.

Driveshafts are easy. Do that one yourself.

+2...go with a driveshaft first. much easier install and you can do it yourself, steeda sells a nice safety loop that can be installed without taking the shaft out.

gears are a tougher install
