Which gear? 3.73 or 4.10's?

Question Which gear? 3.73 or 4.10's?

Fixing to upgrade the gear in my GT and wondered if anyone had any opinions as to get 3.73's or 4.10's. Im running the 5-spd automatic in my car. Should I use a tune to adjust the shifts or leave it the way it is. Any opiniojns would be appreciated. Also thinking about putting like a 2800 stall speed torque converter in.

Most will tell you 4.10's but I would imagine it depends on what kind of driving you do most days.

I'm personally leaning towards 3.73's to get a kick in the pants without too much RPM gains or loss of traction in general driving.

Im leaning towards 3.73's myself. I drive it mostly to work and back, but i dont want to sacrafice hwy rpms too drastically.

Just for comparison, here is the rpm difference between stock 3.31s, 3.73s and 4.10s at 70mph (assuming stock tires and an auto trans in OD).

3.31: 2,150 rpm
3.73: 2,422 rpm
4.10: 2,662 rpm

I've ran 4.10s in mine for more than 13,000 miles (both N/A and with a blower), and I have no regrets.

There is a company that makes 3:90's for 8.8's but its not FMS.

After having 4:10's in my automatic and using it for drag racing I wouldn't suggest it. For daily use its fine nothing wrong there but on the track the gearing inside the auto just doesn't work well enough, for me, with the automatics.

I'm going to a 3:55 in my car and I wouldn't recommend anything larger then a 3:73 unless you plan on mainly using it for drag racing then I would go 4:30's.

That's interesting Doug... I really like the 4.10s at the track. But, I reserve the right to change my mind once I hit the track again with close to 500ftlbs of torque. haha

Listen to Doug. I have an auto w/ 3.73's and I love it. I can tell a good bit of difference. I think 4.10's would be too low for daily driving. Doug's opinion is also shared by a local tuner in my hometown, the guy who installed my 3.73's, and Lidio. I'm not saying the guys w/ 4.10's are going to have problems, but I'm not going to chance it.

I haven't noticed any loss of traction on my auto 06 GT and 4.10's. I haven't been to a track though, and I'm only running an 87 octane 'generic tune' so that might be different.

I drove my car with the 4.10s with nothing more than a CAI & tune for about 6 months (and over 10K miles, plus a couple hundreds passes at the track) and loved it. In fact, that's when I think it made the most sense... when it was nearly stock. As my torque increases dramatically, the 4.10s become more and more suspect. I may have to consider changing them if they are too low for the amount of torque I have now.

I dropped my time over half a second with the addition of 4.10 gears, and a C & L with Alternative Auto tune. I wouldn't change a thing.

Hey Alan,

Did you talk about the 4.10's with Lidio? When I called him and told him I was going w/ 4.10's and I needed my tune updated he completely talked me out of the 4.10's........that's why I ended up going with 3.73's. Then not long after that Doug posted a topic that echoed what Lidio had told me. I was just curious if Lidio told us two different things?

I have the 3:73 and they pull great. Not sure you will be able to change the shift points unless at WOT.

I had already purchased the 4.10's before I spoke to Lidio. He had just done a tune for someone with 3.90's, and told me his concerns about the 4.10's. I figured I would try them, since I didn't feel like selling them and buying 3.73's.

i personally would go with a 3.55 or 3.73 since my car is a show, street, strip i do not want to go as far as 4.10 or 4.30...another thing would i need a master installation kit to put in the gears
