Gas fumes and smell with OR H/X pipe???

Hey guys!
I am thinking about getting an OR H-pipe or X. Well anyway, I started up my old 89GT last week which has an off road H-pipe, shorties and aftermarket mufflers. Anyway, my garage smelled so bad with all the gas and exhaust fumes, I almost passed out (not really, but you get the idea). It has always been this way even when I used to drive it everyday.

Do the S197 have this same trait with an off road H-pipe?

when I put on my H-pipe, I also noticed more of a gas scent on the regular, but this is because you dont have the Cats filtering the exhaust anymore. Its not as bad as my friend's 95 GT, but you do smell them if the car is in place or you are in reverse.

Yes, you're cutting out the emissions equip. How can you not love the smell of off-road exhaust?

Yup, you will get the smell. The GF and my son are giving me crap about it sense I put it on... might be getting rid of my H-pipe soon.

I don't think it's that bad...

Don't take this the wrong way, but it's like asking "If I take the mufflers off my car, will it be louder?" (trying not to sound like a jerk)

I like the smell.. it reminds me of the Mach, but I'm not the only one that has to put up with it.

Well you do sound like a jerk but thats cool, I should have worded my question better. Anyway I did KNOW ALREADY what the purpose of the cats are and that I would smell more exhaust fumes.
Basically I am just wondering if the fox bodies are just a lot worse than the new body style in regards to exhaust fumes.
My 89GT exhaust stinks and I mean stink. I would come home smelling like exhaust by just getting out of it and walking into the house for a few minutes.

It might not be as bad since the S197 is prob more efficent in its combustion.

I had off road X pipe on my 99 GT, i could smell the fumes while sitting in traffic but never had my clothes smell bad after driving.

Hey 8905 - check out www.2005stang.com - there's a bunch of AZ locals there w/ OR exhaust who would probably love to meet up and let you hear/smell the exhaust. They're always getting together and taking pics, etc.

Oh yeah, it smells!

I had mine on for a day and a half, and I felt like I was being poisoned. eMy wife complianed that my clothes smelled like gas, and it was very noticable in the cabin when I was stopped at a light. I have a vert, so it probably was a little worse. This was on a Pypes off-road H.

Darth,
That’s exactly what I was worried about. I mean I love the sound of my old 89 but the fumes make you nauseous at times. I guess I need to hear (smell) the S197 with an OR H-pipe and/or X pipe in person because 8/10 sound clips on the internet sound like crap anyway. Sounds like a tractor, I think the new 3V engines have too low of an exhaust note to begin with. Thanks!

I can't think of a reason for a "gas" smell with the cats removed if the engine is burning the cylinder charge right, I do know the computer will adjust the a/f ratio to manage the operation of the cats - I'm just thinking that there would be a way to tune this out.

The computer doesn't know you've removed the cats so it just goes about its business as normal, doing what it was tuned to do thinking the cats are in place. If there is some way to cut of the a/f functions that pertain to the operation of the cats it might clear up the "gas" smell.

It's not a 'gas' smell as much as an exhaust smell. I think a tune would have a minimal difference, if any. It's an IC motor, there's gonna be exhaust, and either you like the smell or you don't. Me, I think it's cologne.

The cats are there for a reason. Even the most efficient IC engine doesn't burn 100% of the fuel. The cat finishes the combustion and cleans up those fumes.

It's strange. When I was a kid and NO cars had cats, I never really noticed the smell unless the car was REALLY out of tune. Now that most all cars are catted, an uncatted car really stinks, tuned well or not!

Sort of like smoking I guess. People don't realize just how much it stinks until they quit.
