FRPP GTA Mufflers are rusting

Thats right, these mufflers havn't even been on for a month and the tips are rusting. I guess they just cant handle the salt here in chicago. I thought these were stainless steel tips? I even polished the tips with mothers chrome polish before I did the install. What a bummer. I'm going to check if there is some kind of warranty on these. I got them at Jegs so maybe they will help me out. Man, you would think if they are putting these on Shelby Stangs they wouldn't rust this easy!

The GTA's are only 409 SS. Sorry to say they will rust. I also see you are in the snow belt. If you drive around at this time of year with the salt on the road it will accelerate the process. Sad but true!!

I just removed a set from my Stang today! I'm going to hit the rust with a buffing wheel to see how much of it is just surface rust ! but yes 70MACH1OWNER is right on the money.

That blows. I had a Borla system on my last car and it never rusted at all. What kind of stainless will not rust?

I've got GTA's and they get some rust on them after the winter. I just took some steel wool to them and they cleaned up pretty good.

The following is a public service announcement:

"Wash your car in the winter."

This has been a public service announcement.

My GTA's didn't rust, but two of the four hangers broke off at the welds. I welded them back up, and added some more welding to the other two. After I was done, I shot several coats of flat black high temp paint on everything but the chrome tips. No rust there yet.

It still amazes me how often I have to explain to people that there is more than one kind of stainless steel and yes some stainless can rust.
Even the guys that have been in the car business for years will argue with me like I am an idiot.

While we are on the subject of what type of SS a particular muffler is made from....Can anyone tell me what the polished Magnaflows are made from???? I even took a magnet to Brenspeeds yesterday to test a set but he did not have a set in stock!!! I want to know!!! And no guessing!!! And for the record. 409 SS is magnetic and 304 SS is not. 409 will rust and 304 will not!

Although 409 grade SS is prone to surface rust. From my understanding. It's not supposed to rust through.

As for the Magnaflows. I believe their 304 grade SS, but I'm not 100% certain Scott. So you may want to contact Magnaflow, just to make sure

Hey Rocky,
I have been all over there their website and accually sent them an email last Thursday before I went to Brenspeeds. I have not heard anything yet. 409 SS is only resistant to rust. It is magnetic... meaning it has iron in it. It will rust thru in time. Trust me. Most stock exhaust systems for the last 10 -15 yrs are 409 SS. We have all had to replace them...just take a few more years.

I posted a thread on this same topic one week ago another forum. I had my GTA's on for only 6 days in Pennsylvania and I started getting surface rust on the tips! They will not rust through but they will get surface rust. Mine was easily removed with metal polish.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum...sorry to disagree. They will rust thru in time. And the welded areas will be the first to go. The welding process eliminates what little resistance 409 SS has to rusting. The welds will be the first to go. Trust me. I have worked with these metals for over 33 years.

Scott ! instead of sending an e-mail. You'll get a much faster response, if you call their tech line. Here's the toll free number (800) 817-3930
