Expensive air filter

Went to my local Ford dealer to pick up an air filter for my 05 GT and I passed on it when they told me it was $38. You're kidding, I told the parts guy. Isn't it just a plain nonreusable filter? He then told me he would sell it to me for $33. I know I'm getting older but didn't filters like that used to cost about $10 to $12. You use them for a year and throw them out!
Well anyway at least I got to see a lot of 07 Mustangs in their lot. People buying now at least have some to pick from right off the lot. I had to wait four months for my car to get built. But she is exactly what I wanted.

I know I going to get flamed for this but I then went to my local Checker and ordered a Fram air filter. It is not an oil filter so why spend $38 for the Ford? It cost $10.99 and will be here tomorrow. I just don't see what is wrong with the Fram air filter and why the Ford costs almost 4 times the price. I only have about 3400 miles on my car since it is not a daily driver. The original Ford filter from 6/05 is only slightly dirty. Checker and Autozone don't stock the Fram air filters for the 05 GT for some reason. So you do have to order them. OK, now I know that everybody will get on here and tell me why I should not use the Fram air filter. In other vehicles I've had, I've always used Fram air filters.

Buy a K&N drop in replacement filter off ebay or your local auto shop. Watch your gas mileage get better too... I went from about 17-18mpg city/highway typical driving to 19-20mpg just by dropping a K&N. They are only about $40-50.00.

Get a washable/reusable filter (see above post), it'll cost you less in the long run. Just don't over-oil it (if applicable).

Hey Scarpi,
Several months back you posted something about looking for a new air filter. Remember? Also back than I posted that I had a S&B filter for the stock air box that is left over from my CDC shaker install. Since I am running a C&L intake I will never use it. I offered it to you in a post back than for free if you would just cover the shipping. The offer is still there. Back then you never replied back. In case you don't know the S&B filter I have is the same as the K&N filter. You'll never get a better offer than that will you?

I have to agree with the 3 posts above. Throw in a lifetime warrantied and reusable/cleanable air filter such as K&N or Green Filter. The Green Filter is my personal favorite, for quality. The guys at AFE also make a great filter as well.

For the extra couple bucks, the gas money you save and not having to purchase a new filter will continue to feed money into your wallet for as long as you own the car.

I've read on other car forums that if you are not carefull, the oil on the K and N can foul some sensors in Fords and Chevys. Although I don't know what sensor they are talking about.

FA-1773, $21.95 at Yocum Ford:

$26.95 at RockAuto

$25.95 at Summit Racing:

Seeing how the prices are still rather high, wait a few more years and it will drop down in price. The Marauder air filters were $20-$30 each back when the Marauder was new. As the years went by, the price dropped to about $10, the normal price for a panel filter.

I'd never use a K&N filter. K&N's quality control for its panel filters is atrocious. I received a brand new panel filter straight from K&N and it had metal wires and cotton fibers running all over the place. I had to trim all of that junk using clippers. I've had to return 4 K&N panel filters in the past because there were defects in the polyurethane seal (gaping holes that allowed dirt to flow into the engine). It says "MADE IN USA" but it looks and feels like they were made in China.

The conical filters, like the ones used in the CAI kits, seem to be of much higher quality the last time I checked. You'd figure the panel filters are easier to make and check!

Of course you wouldn't use a K&N filter. You are 110% bone stock!

Probably the best filter out there is the AFE. They manufacture for TRD (Toyota Racing Development) among others. They have the top dust capacity in the industry, and use a progressive bump seal like OE for the best seal in the industry as well... because a filter is only as good as it's seal.

http://afefilters.com/oereplacement.htm Here's their direct replacement line. Spend the extra money to get this filter and feel the difference in quality!

The website says they aren't available for Mustang GTs yet.

You could also look at Fram, Wix, Purolator, and other aftermarket replacements. I know there's a lot of hatred towards Fram oil filters, but their air filters aren't *too* shabby.

One reason I dislike Fram is that they've pushed their products to almost every store out there (the wall of Orange).

Wal-Mart luckily still has a small supply of Motorcraft oil filters.

The mass air meter/sensor, since it is the only one in the direct airflow path from the filter. Hence, the caution about over-oiling. Supposedly there was a aftermarket filter brand that supposedly had an oil that wouldn't foul the sensor but I can't recall which one it was. Also heard of some air intake kits with washable filters that don't require oil at all. But again, ...

Yea the problem was over oiling. Oil is only there to help catch particles, and should be sprayed very conservatively. Alot of guys drench the outside of the filter and have problems. Again, sometimes the factory over-oils during manufacturing as well. We get K&N filters in that are drenched all the time. The bag is like full of liquid.
