the other day when i got the headers on i drove around the block with just the headers and it sounded like a dragster and it was fun. just wondering if anyone has done it. how much hp are we talking about if done?

 

I would not do this!!! I tried this once back when I was 17 with my 88 GT and was told that you can $%&# up the valves because there is no backpressure because of the lack of mufflers on the car. Not recommended.

 

I know a guy that has the exhaust cutout...on an SRT4.
There's an 05 in the NMRA circuit that runs open headers and runs mid 11's. Sounds and looks like it should be running 9's. Sounds like poo though. As my 6 yr old son would say, "a lot of noise and not going anywhere."

 

You definetly need back pressure for these motors to run right. You could do some damage and it probably wont help at all with HP numbers. And yes, it does sound like poo.

 

do a search..... I had a thread a long while back on electric cutouts off the headers. Its not a good idea for several reasons, although I think it sounds good.

 

How about an exhaust cutout right before the mufflers?

 

doesn't don_w run open cutouts at the strip? I had them on my old camaro right after the headers, ran just fine when they were open. different motor though.

 

Yes, I do... and I've had no issues whatsoever. The car runs fine, and doesn't sound like "poo". But, that's just my opinion.

 

Don, would you have any sound clips or pic's?? I really think this would be a cool mod to stand out from the crowd. Ever since I replaced my SLP's I have wanted a much louder sound. these might be nice so that I can switch it open when I;m idling or at a car show or something.

 

I don't believe it will damage the motor at all to run open headers. I also don't really buy the statement that backpressure is needed for these motors to run right....If more backpressure made 'em run right why do people open up the exhaust with headers, x-pipes, and straight through mufflers? ever see a set of mufflers or long pipes with bends on a dragster "just to add a little backpressure, and make her run right"?

I would warn against those... I had a set of them on my old truck and they were horrible... sure you could open up the pipes but once you took them off for the first time you will never get a good seal without leaks... highly warn against!

 

i want the ones with the switch you can have in the cockpit. That would be NASTY just to roll up all quiet and then open her up .. people wont know whats going on!!

I'm going to do the manual wingnut route first, then add on butterfly valves if it works out well.

 

Being a former Honda "Tuner" I can tell you that the whole back pressure thing is valid on 4 cyls and some 6 cyls... Never heard of a V-8 having problems.

man that is a sweet set up... Don, where did you purchase your cut outs from?? Is it hard to have installed? Sorry about all the questions.

 

I believe that running on open shorty type headers is not good but its ok with the LONG headers..........may run a little lean though........actuallt a collector extension is probably in order also.

 

Good luck with that man... Im tellin ya they are not worth it sorry to say... the wing nuts never tighten down enough and it never lines up quite right... you will be plagued with exhaust leaks from the moment you take them off and put them back on... they are a real pita... the leaks do nothing but get louder and louder...
