So, I went and started up my 05 today at about 5:00 pm, hadn't started or driven it all day, when I recieved a rather large ball of exhaust. I just turned it over normally but gave it a little rev and out came some smoke. B)

Question.... is this normal? Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I don't ever recall having something like this happen in a newer car. This was typical when I was driving my 72 Impala years ago but a bran new car?

Idea's anyone? Please!

B) Had about the same thing happen with my V6, went to start it and out of habit I guess I depressed the accelerator just a tick. The engine emitted a cloud of black smoke seemed to stumble ever so slightly and ran smooth and without any problem after that. I just attributed the incident to my technique. The engine had never done it before that day or since.

 

I always see a light water vapor cloud comin' out of both pipes... aslong as it is light gray color & doesn't smell sweet, you'll be fine.

 

Sounds cool! I hope mine does that too. Actually, a little flame shooting out the back would be super!

 

WHat was the temperature when u went out to crank it... usually when its colder outside that happens...

 

Black smoke = Running rich. Not to worry unless it does this when the engine is at operating temp. Performance is affected.

White smoke = condensation/water vapors burning off, normal.

Blue/gray smoke = Never a good thing. Usually oil getting into the combustion chamber.

 

Maybe its caused by the hydrocarbon trap in the intake. Remember, the trap is suppose to collect raw hydrocarbons (gas vapors) after you shut down and then release them when you start up again. Since this "gas vapor" would be in addition to the normal amount of fuel being injected, it would tend to make the car run very rich for a short time. Hense, the exhaust cloud.

I got another one today, it seemed to have a grayish/maybe some blue tint to it. I started it up about an hour ago (11:00 am) just to move it. The temp. outside is a very pleasant 70+ degrees.

I'm going to take it in this Monday for an early Oil change (1200 Miles on it) and ask them to give it a good once over. I hope there's nothing wrong, but something just doesn't seem right here. B)

I get tons of smoke when I start my car...and while driving....hmmm maybe that's because it's -40 outside right now

I just noticed the same thing today with mine and 9800 mile on the clock ... 75 degress outsside so its not water vapor. I have noticed an oily smell about the last week when I start it.

Not a good sign. Sounds like a valve guide seal or two.

 

Thats normal for your car. What happens is when your car sits for a period of time your valve seals shrink and oil drips into your combustion chamber, then when you start your car what oil was in there is burned off. Fords reason for this was that if the valve seals stayed the same all the time the seals would wear faster. so they allowed them to shrink to prolong the seal life. The 4.6s are notorius for this.

 

Also, if you start it and don't run it enuf to reach operating temp. it will be a little rich on next start up. Plus condensation will build up in the engine and exhaust system. These two together will give you some smoke. Just starting it to move it would do it. Take it for a long drive on the highway and then park it and restart it the next day and see if you get it as much.

Well I think its a bit on the abnormal side. We are talking major cloud formation. The car sat like 6 hours only. And it has exhibited a hot or burning oil smell on start up each morning for about the last week or so

A high milage engine will often do this beacuse the valve guides and valve stem seals are worn badly. On shut down, oil weaps down past the guide and on to the top of the valve or into the combustion chamber if the valve is is a open position. Its not like a tablespoon full of oil. Next time the engine fires up, the oil gets hot and smoulders until its all consumed .. only takes seconds. The oil that made it into the combustion chamber is burned off instantly, and because of the high temperatures and pressures does not smoke.
