Eliminating Drone ?
I'm looking for anyone's experience , I've got the FRRP mufflers ( 49 state legal, as made by Borla), and the car drones at a cruising speed of 60 mph. Will installing the 4.10's eliminate this noise ( by making it happen below 50 mph ?). Car is an 05 GT, manual trans, rpms at 60 mph are 2,000. What rpms at 60 do the 4.10's give you ?
TIA,
DanG

Gears are actually a good idea. That should make the drone happen earlier, like you said... that way you won't have to hear it cruising on the interstate. You also may want to try this thread for some info on a sound-deadening coating.
By the way, your avatar is sweet. What year is that behind your '05? It looks like maybe a '67 with a chin spoiler.

Thanks, The car in the background was my '67 coupe. I had it for 21 years and my buddy owns it now. The front spoiler came from Motion Performance back in the old days...I built that car by myself, to include stripping the body, and painting it, then building a Paxton supercharged 302 ( this was before liters defined engine size.., 4 wheel disc brakes...
DanG,
I'd like to get the same set of mufflers. I'm concerned with the drone thing though. Yesterday when I went for a drive, I tried to keep track of the rpms. A lot of the time, I'm around 1700 to 2500 rmps. Is this the drone range? And, how bad is the drone??? I'm don't believe I want to switch to 4.10's. I'm affraid of the whine associated with that. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Hey Guys,
I have the Borla catback system and 4.10's and the "Drone Zone" for me is between 1700 and 2000 rpms. In 5th gear, I hit 2000 just before 60 mph, so no drone on the highway for the most part. I had the 4.10's before the Borlas, so I can't give you an opinion vs. stock gears, but I have to assume that you move through the drone a bit quicker with the steeper gears. I will say this: If you are sensitive to noise, skip the Borlas!
Matt, I wouldn't fear the gear whine. Even though my first set of 4.10 were crap and my total install - with parts + labor for sets - was over a grand, I still love the mod. I will never go back!

Over a grand, isn't that pretty high??? I thought they were quite a bit less than that.

I have the Borla's and think they are the greatest sounding muffler out there for the 05/06 mustang. Changing gears will move the drone around in the cruise cycle but will not elininate it. If you want mean, then get the Borla's. If you want perfect (no drone) stay with stock. Just my 2 $

My first attempt ran me about $650 for gears, install kit, etc. Those 4.10's were Precisions (Not!) and whined like a pig. My installer pulled those and sent them back to Precision for a refund which has yet to come. I won't hold my breath.
The 2nd attempt was with FRPP and they are nearly silent. I paid for the gears + $180 labor which brought me over $1000 for the whole mess. The same reputable shop did both installs and I saw that both gears set up with the same pattern but with totally different results. I don't blame him for the $180 in labor on the 2nd install, but I could have done without eating the bad gears. Welcome to high performance mods!

I agree Scott! The sound (minus the drone) is pure music. I was not at all unhappy with the stock pipes but then I heard the Borlas side by side with mine and was sold. The next morning I had Borlas!

I bought Hooker Aerochambers when they first came out, because the advertised them as "Eliminated the Drone". (Previously I had SLP Power-Flows - with Drone). It didn't, they droned just as much as the next guy. About a month later I went back to their site and they have since removed that comment from their ads.

I really like the mufflers, and the sound is great , except for the drone while cruising on the Hwy.. I only notice it while doing a steady 60mph on the Hwy. I can make the stereo loud enough to mask it ).I think I'll talk myself into getting the 4:10's, and the drone should disappear a little bit sooner while cruising on the Hwy....

Dan, that '67 is sweet. You know I'm a Mustang fanatic when I knew what year that was just by the front quarter of it in an avatar. And as some may know, I am especially fond of that year. I really like the chin spoiler too. I have seen a couple '67 Shelby's with chin spoilers. I think it really sets the car off. Sorry you had to part with it... but if you are going to do that, giving it to a friend is the way to go.
