Driveline vibration

I am getting a hell of a vibration on my spydershaft at about 100 mph and up. I have tried adjusting the pinion angle, and phasing the shaft 180 degrees. I have been reading about the pinion flange nut torque being critical (and kicking myself in the *** because I just used an electric impact gun to put it back on). would the pinion nut being too tight cause vibration at high speed?

I wouldn't think getting the pinion nut back on too tight would cause a vibration. It would be hard on the bearings if the preload is too high. Do you have any vibration before you get up to 100 mph? I don't remember how long you have had your Spydershaft. Has it done this since installed?

I'm starting to read about a number of cars with aftermarket suspension components having problems with vibrations with aluminum shafts. Assuming your install was done correctly, maybe you're getting harmonics from the stiffer suspension and one piece shaft.

My car does the same...I have checked and rechecked everything...must be just a combo of NVH increasers...Its noisy and stuff but the feels stable...i also have a nice drone pulsing frequency at 70-90 that i attribute to the same things (shaft, rear suspension mods, tires, springs)...

Same problem here with my coast shaft. Im back to the stock shaft but I still have a slight vibration above 100mph. The shop working on my car has been great and realy wants to find the problem. The car is going back to the shop friday for them to work on the rearend to see if the problem is there. Ill post my findings here in this thread as well as in my thread.

I have had the shaft on that car for about 12 weeks but don't get the car above 80 very often. i was at the strip when i noticed it the first time and that was at over 100. then i noticed it on the highwayat just past 85. it is a vibration that rattles the rearview mirror pretty hard. at the track it really worried me since it felt like the shaft was going to scatter on me. i have since adjusted, and re-adjusted the pinion angle to try to get rid of it. it seemed to go away from 85 to 100 or so, but now it is there at 100-120 and wont seem to go away. I am going to try to re-phase the shaft today and see what that does. I am fine with a little nvh (I actually like the way the prothane mounts let me feel the motor more) but serious vibration (I am talking about when the rearview mirror is about to rattle off the windshield) is not cool.

is a "harmonic" vibration going to lead to a broken driveline, or premature wear on the drivetrain?

Welcome back! I have the Spydershaft and have no issues up to 110. Haven't been over that since I installed the shaft.

110 for me is like 200 for you young guns.

Hopefuly there wont be any premature wear to the driveline. I realy think that the vibration is in the driveline to begin with and the mods we do just help transmit it to the chasis where we feel it. I wish I had driven my car over 100mph when it was stock so I would know if the issue was there prior to the gears being done.

The bolts are critical on torque specs when reinstalling the shaft.

Front flange 76 lb-ft
rear adapter 41 lb-ft
pinion nut 140 lb-ft

If you can put your rear axle on good jack stands so you run
car in gear at idle, check drive shaft for any wobble at axle end.
I had one of the spydershafts that had a bad yoke welded to shaft,
with a dial indicator it read about .050 from true checking by hand
after I saw wobble when running.
Had the same good till 85 and could feel vibration above that.
Contacted spydershaft and got good service with exchange,
no problems since.

Great advice! The nice thing is the Ron will stand behind his shafts 100%.

Well you are right...any driveshaft that runsout .050 should shake your eye teeth out. I wouldn't know how something that bad would get though the balancing machine. I accually checked the runount on mine when I did the install. .004 was the worse I saw on either end.

Ron couldn't figure how it got out either, but it did.
Said he got some yokes from Ford that were machined wrong.
This was last summer.

Oh man don't tell me that. I got mine from him last summer and I simply have not had the time or money to install it and finish what needs to be done.

I truly hope i did not get one of those.

I have no problem believing he could have gotten some badly machined yokes from Ford. But the guy running the balancing machine...which is the last operation before putting it in a box to ship would have to be asleep or dead not to pickup on a shaft that bad. Not good.

Why do you need money to install it? Just get a buddy with the right tools and do it yourself.

I've got all the tools, equipment and skill to do the shaft myself. But i plan on also having my gears installed and doing it all at once. Along with the UCA.

I was told that my adjustable panhard bar might be causing this issue. shaftmasters said the only problems they have had with vibrations came from cars with adjustable panhard rods. hmmmmm
