You could buy one for a Ranger, buy a new flange, take it to a driveshaft shop and have it shortened by 9" and have the flange put on, and only be out about $375-$400 at most.

I ordered the parts last week. Mine will be done shortly.

I got my driveshaft from here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-FRT-RA...itemZ8011641963
and the flange from here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-FRT-SV...itemZ7997740951
I bought them at the same time and he put both parts in the same box. Shipping was like 20 bucks... got here in 3 or 4 days.
Of course, I have yet to get it cut and installed... I just need to find someplace that will cut and balance it. I also have 3.73 gears to get put in, and I want them both in at the same time.

I ordered them from Summit. You can find the parts cheaper but you still have to pay for the shipping. Summit is a little more costly but they pay for shipping. So it works out to be about the same.

i got mine off ebay Bryant Motorsports (rbracing). roland is great to work with. he asked me if i had a fleet of rangers with bad driveshafts cause i ordered 2 within 2 weeks. one in mine and vegasjay has the other i had made. total investment $330 with labor for cut and balance.

Was the difference noticeable when you installed the Aluminum driveshaft? What kind of shop would you take the driveshaft to in order to get it cut and balanced?

If you use the M-4851-A companion flange you can reduce the weight by another 2 pounds by eliminating the rear bolt on flange. The rear universal joint attaches directly to this pinion flange.

Just a FYI, If you remove the companion flange you should do a new pinion crush sleeve and pinion nut.
If not, you may have vibration issues by not having the correct pinion preload.

If you follow the instructions in the Ford service manual for changing the pinion seal you'll be OK.

The B flange is $30.00. The A flange is $74.88 at Summit. So it's $44.88 more. I'm looking to shave every ounce of weight I can from my drivetrain. For me it's worth it, for others maybe not.

I made a mistake posting that the M-4851-A companion flange will fit the 8.8 rearend. It will not. It is for a 9" rearend. I am now searching for the correct one. I'm sorry for the posting the wrong information. I'll get back to this thread when I find the correct one.

Thanks George for clarifying that. It didn't regisiter with me that "eliminating the rear flange" meant using the "A" flange instead of the "B". Sounds like something I'll be adding to my ever growing list. It was shrinking at one point, LOL...
