"Some will claim that heat from the engine compartment will be transferred through the pipe of the intake system and into the air passing through the pipe, but this is not true. Testing by Sport Compact Car showed negligible change in intake temperature between where it enters the filter and when it passes through the throttlebody. Their conclusion was that the air is passing through the pipe at a high enough speed that it does not have time to pick up any heat from the pipe itself. Further evidence of this is the fact that the Ice Man brand intake system, made of heat insulating PVC plastic, tested at 9 HP while the AEM brand intake system, made of heat conducting aluminum, tested at 12.9 HP. The conclusion is clear that the design of the intake system is more important than what type of pipe is used to make the intake system."

 

I have to agree. Do a search for "data logging" and you should come across a thread I started last October on data logging stock and aftermarket intakes. Most of the CAIs actually do a very good job of providing cool air to the car. The factory intake sucks though...

 

Next time I drive close to the sun I will need one of these but until then it is a total waste on money.

I'm surprised you would agree with the previous post that it doesn't make a difference. I remember the 'data logging' post you put forward..EXCELLENT! I believe when the cars sit at a light for a short time the intake temps climb. After 1-2 minutes of travelling they cool down fast. If you're someone who likes to 'challenge' another at a light, that 20-30F temp increase while idling could mean the difference. I wouldn't pay $100 for a heat shield...he can buy a cheap roll of ThermaFreeze for $15 and do better. I'm curious to your additional thoughts RRRoamer??!! However, the reason that the inlet air temperature increases for a motionless car with a fully warmed up engine is because the intake is inhaling the rising hot ambient air surrounding the engine, and not because of the intake tube's higher temperature which transfers only a miniscule amount of its heat per each cubic foot of inlet air due to the high inlet air velocities, and thus is insufficient to reduce hp. Hence, the same amount of inlet air temperature increase occurs in that same situation even if the intake tube is wrapped with insulating material.

I thoroughly disagree with you. If you read all the posts and went to the sites offered in those posts you would have found this link which shows how a fully insulated original intake will drastically reduce temps. I have my vehicle fully set up with contact themocouples and the results are drastic. Let me know what you think of the article. I try to find real world analyses done by us regular driver's since magazine articles tend to be a little skewed.

In fact, I found a blurb where another car owner did some heat reflective tape testing, and got similar results. So I humbly retract my negative stance on the tape's temperature reducing benefits.

One more thought.If it makes sense to insulate the tubing what about insulating the shield as well?
