Check Engine Light, Running Too Rich

Last night I got the dreaded engine symbol lit up, but no message on the message center. It did not go into failsafe mode, and I didn't hear or feel anything funny. I checked it with the X-Cal and got my code, P0175- system too rich in bank 2.

I know a lot of people have gotten the lean codes, especially with a CAI, but I don't know of anyone who has gotten a rich code. I checked all my hoses and CAI, everything looks good. I cleared it and we'll see if it comes back I guess. I'd hate to have to spend the money and get it dyno'd if I don't have to. (not that I wouldn't mind doing it, just don't have the $$ to spend!!)

I wonder if the gas could be to blame, since the last tank came from 200 miles away from home, and may have had ethanol in it.

How many miles you got on your plugs?

Sticking injector is a possibility.

53K miles, about 6K on my previous canned SCT tune, and the last 1K on Tillman Speed's tune. Wouldn't a sticking injector make it run like crap?

^That's what Im thinking. Go by the dealer (hate reccomending that), but it may be something simple. One of my friends had that problem, and the fuel cap was broken or something like that.

I forgot to mention it happened when I was just cruising through town, I had not been hitting it hard at all for the last 10 minutes, and the car was fully warmed up. I think it came on while I was coasting down a hill, still in gear.

With 53K miles, I'm not going anywhere near a dealership unless it is absolutely necessary.

Would advise waiting to see if it comes back.... then decide what to do.

I think so too. I'm concerned, but not alarmed. Rich won't hurt parts, lean will. It might foul out the plugs sooner, and build up some carbon on pistons and valves, but that can all be cleaned out with some seafoam. Holes in pistons are a little bit of a bigger problem.

If it comes back, I might think about getting a dyno run set up to check my a/f ratios.

That's what I was going to suggest. Possibly get your O2 sensors looked at also.

It's unpredictable. If it's sticking bad enough, you will notice it. It will stick some of the time and to varying lengths (time). In other words, it could not stick for a day or a week, then all of a sudden, stick once or twice or more.... just enough to set a rich code on that bank, assuming it's sticking open. It could even stick closed, causing a lean condition. Also, if it sticks open upon shutdown, fuel will run into the cylinder causing a hard start. Too many variables, therefore it's unpredictable.

Check out the vent hose near the throttle body

I had mine throw a running rich code once. It was shortly after I was messing around with my CAI and re-loaded my Bama 93 Race tune. I do remember thinking it was running just a tad rough after reloading the tune. I probably put 20 city miles on before it threw the running rich code. After inspection of the intake I noticed the vent hose on the inlet near the throttle body was not seated properly (the hose with the green clip). After reseating that hose and clearing the code, it ran smoother and didn't throw the code again. Haven't had the problem since and that was 3000 miles ago or so. May want to give that a look see.. it's pretty easy to miss.

Well, it threw the code again. Same as before, I was decelerating down a hill. This time the engine had not warmed up yet, had only been running about 3-4 minutes. I have put about 1000 miles on it (road trip) since the last code, and changed my tune from a 93 Perf. to an 87 Perf. in that time. I probably had about 700 miles on the 87 tune when the dreaded engine light turned on again. I have checked everything, it's all tight and nothing is loose that I can tell. I haven't changed anything under the hood since the last code either.

Guess I'll be calling CR at Tillman Speed tomorrow and see if he has any suggestions.

could be bad gas.. I was having the same issues.. if u have a ladtop u can try datalogging and them sending it to CR. He can check and see, it might be the o2 sensors too.
