changed strut mounts and still have clunk?

SUCKS! I've had the front end cluck for a while so I changed out the front strut mounts for the GT500's, and I still have a clunk. the dealer also changed out the front LCA's about 10K miles ago. Any ideas? Its a 2008 GT 5-speed. All other suspension is stock.

i wes thinking about that so I disconnected the end links and took it for a ride and it still did it. So now i can take the sway bar and the end links out of the equation. I reconnected the sway bar and checked all my connections and they are all tight. Could be Tie-rods? Ball joints? LCA's? ugh... i'm gonna make an appointment for the dealer. Any more thoughts?

Possible ball joints. Lift one tire off the ground and jerk it back and forth from top and bottom. Does it pop? What's the condition of the control ARM bushings? And I don't think tie rods make a pop noise. But could be wrong.

I have 185K on all the original components with no noise. I have greased all joints using a needle that fits the grease gun for my normal maintenance. You can buy one at most part stores.

Have you owned the car since new? If not check for body repair.

Could be motor mounts, maybe rack mounts.

Good luck.

Good idea but his joints are non serviceable. They are sealed joints.

That's the whole point of the grease needle. It is like a hypodermic needle, you puncture the boot for each joint & pump in your grease, it leaves a very small hole in the boot that has no affect on performance. I have been doing it for years on all my vehicles & have never had to change a component.

Ooo. Didn't know of that. Here in tx the heat and dryness usually destroys the boot long before the greese needs replacement.

I would think that the LCA bushings would be good considering the dealer changed them about 9 months ago. The grease is a good idea but that wont fix the problem at hand. I can only guess that the ball joints or LCA's are bad? The clunk was annoying before I changed the strut mounts now its worse. It sounds like bad end links, but i took the end links out of the mix by disconnecting them... I just don't know. The car has 50K on it. I'm thinking it's something about my install but everything is tight.

Soooooo, Would worn out tie rod ends make a clunking sound... mind you my car tracks straight and there is no play in the steering. The only other thing would be ball joints? I took apart the front suspension again and re-checked EVERYTHING. I have pulled on the wheels to see if the bearings were bad (would that also check for bad ball joints?) This is making me crazy. Remember i ruled out the sway bar and end links by disconnecting the end links and moving the sway bar out of the way. took it for a drive and the CLUNK was still their.

My '06 just developed the clunk this week. Going to order the J&M C&C plates. After reading this I'm going to be paranoid and check everything while I got it apart!

Might be something internally in the shocks? Strut bushings?

ok Update... I pulled the freaking thing apart again! The driver side stopped making noise after i put it back together. Now the passenger side is making clunks and i think i found the problem! The boot on the outer tie rod end is ripped! so I'm gonna pick one up tomorrow and change it out. Anyone know? Is it a straight change out? Remove the nut pound it out from the top and it just drops down? then unscrew it from the tie rod?

****!! Still have the CLUNK!! I guess all is not lost on that change out because the tie rod end boot was ripped so it was still worth changing. Im done, the freaking thing is going to Ford... don't want to do it but the car looks so nice I just can't stand that it clunks! I will let you all know what they find. Thanks for the input this site IS the BEST. FYI i bought the car used with about 25K on the clock and it had a clunk. I took it to Ford under warrantee and they changed the front LCA's... right and left side. That fixed it for about 16K just in time for the warrantee to expire.

In my 07 GT/CS I started with the 1st issue strut mounts and had the cluck. I changed to the updated version strut and had clucking. Brought the GT500 struts and the clucking went away for about 7,000 miles. Brought the MM Struts and the clucking was as loud as ever. Looked at all the compornets and decided to place some thin rubber gasket material under the springs where it rests on the strut/shock. No clucking at all. Nice and quiet. All fixed.

Hi DPHC13,

I recommend you make another appointment with your Ford dealership for diagnosis. Then, I’d like to look into this further for you. Since I have most of your info, please private message me with your contact information and your current mileage.

Kinda pissed at Ford! They call me after having the car for more than 8 hours. They cant find the problem and are charging me 49 dollars. So they want to know if i want them to "invest more time" in it @ 49 bucks an hour. So i told them if they cant find it in 8 hours i don't know what they are going to find with more time! The woman on the phone told me they could hook it up to the chassis ears and take a listen... I said why haven't you hooked it up yet?? Well as i'm righting this they have called me and told me there would be no charge for the time today and they want their service manager to look at it and if i can bring it back later in the week. I set up an appointment for Wednesday at 2:30. we will see if they can find the mystery "clunk". I'm still a little upset that I took my car to "the best of the best" Ford and they can find a problem. The car was in about 9 months ago for the same sound and they replace the lower control arm and it went away. Now the car is out of warrantee and they tell me that the sound "is not a safety issue". Well I don't care if it's a safety issue, my beautiful Mustang should NOT be making a loud clunking sound from the front end. If I could have diagnosed the problem myself I would have fixed it. This is why I took it to Ford and NOT Antioch Auto repair. I can take my car wherever I want to get it fixed, and I took it to Ford for quality service NOT "We can't figure it out and you'll be OK"!!! Sorry I'm venting a little bit. But I expect more from my local Ford service department.
