C&L Racer CAI Installed (w/pics)

I decided to upgrade my existing K&N CAI to the C&L Racer for both performance and cosmetic reasons.

Sorry, no full write-up on the install, but it’s pretty straight forward.

Note: The Racer now comes with a PCV hose pre-attached to the elbow.

Note: A tune is required when running this CAI.

Here are some highlights of the install…

I got some black silicone hoses instead of using the supplied blue ones.

Here’s a good comparison shot between the C&L Racer and the K&N.

I decided not to zip-tie the forward point of the heatshield to the ABS lines. Once the hood is shut, the heatshield will be secured in place.

Walkaround video (also highlighting the UDP’s).

Hey Bill, when you get back from your test drive, I am interesting in knowing just how much difference it makes compared to the K&N.

Yah I just put in my c&l racer a few weeks ago. I like the looks and size. I hope tillman comes out with a heat shield some day. The c&l heatshields suck. Mine came with a proper nipple for the stock locking hose tho. I actually had that rubber style hose on my granatelli and I didnt like the look. So I am glad when I got mine they were still using the proper attaching nipple for the lock down factory style piece. Enjoy Taco Bill. Nice Pics, OH yah I like the blue, but the black looks nice as well.

Well Bill you have just about reached the end of the line for a N/A mod motor. I guess cams and longtubes would be about the only thing left.

I would really like to go for a ride in your car just to see how much different it feels than mine with your mods. You have done an excellent job making it your own! 2 big up!!!

+1. Mine came with the factory style PCV attachment too. I also like the black hoses but I was considering red for mine. Where did you end up buying the hoses from Bill? Can you tell a difference from the K&N?

I love the fact you are sharing this experience with your Son. This is what will make it all worth while the day he asked for the keys Bill/Dad.

Dear Bill,

Which tuner did your kit come with? Seat of the pants should tell you that the tune required C&L gives a couple extra ponies. I am running (2) C&L Racer intakes with Diablosport tunes as I fell in love with the first car's performance and simply slapped one on the second car.

Thanks guys!
Though nothing wrong with the K&N, I'm glad I made the switch.

That's a tough one to answer.. Because I went on a mod binge lately, the added power and acceleration from the gears, UDP's, CMDP's, and now the Racer intake, all seem to blend into each other. I know I've got additional hp's from the Racer (over the K&N), but I think my butt-o-meter has gotten numb over the past couple of weeks. Car just seems really fast now.

You forgot one, Rich.. the 1-piece driveshaft. I think that'll be the last power-adder for me. No cams or LT's for me, it's just too much of a PITA to swap out for smog tests (every 2 years (starting in 2011) here in CA )

I got the silicone hoses from Hose Techniques. They are around 3/4" longer than the supplied blue hoses, but they fit fine.

I just got the Racer only, no tune package.
I already have a SCT Xcal2. Doug e-mailed me the modified tune required for the Racer.

Good idea, Bill. I went the cheap way and flipped the supplied blue ones inside out.

Not quite! C&L has another toy in the works for the N/A folks...

3-Valve Intake Manifold

Actually if you read through it they state that the intake manifold will benefit FI setups or atleast people with cams and ported heads. They say people with light mods or stock will hardly see any improvement due to the factory manifold having a better than average CFM.

TacoBill does it again. As for the 3V manifold, that's absolutely correct. The advantage will be for those running FI or some sort of nitrous setup. However I do have to say that when trick flow comes out with theirs, its going to be a monster.

Yeah, I'm not the least bit intersted in anything that will cause the loss of ANY low end power.
