An axle back will only give you the sound your looking for... To see any real performance gains you'd need to get a catback so you can ditch the factory midpipe. Yes, the axle backs bolt on to the factory midpipe so no worries on fit... It's your choice... I go catback bc borlas so expensive anyways, might as well get some perf gains

I'm pretty sure the borla mids are 2.75 but I'm honestly not positive. Definitely breathes better and dramatically changed sound. No before/after dyno to compare the actual gain #s tough. Definitely my fav mod (that is, the whole catback)

I got them installed... If it were axle-backs I would've done em but I've never swapped a midpipe. The guys at the shop said The Borlas fit perfectly though... Maybe somebody else can chime in

A quality set of axle backs will improve the breathing and will give you the sound you want. And yes, they typically bolt right up to the factor pipe. By itself, you'd be gaining sound only. To get any performance gains, you'd also need to open up the intake side and re-tune the engine for the changes. This is where the real pick-up happens on our mills.

Question you need to answer is what are you looking to get out of the mod? If its purely performance and as much as possible, you will want to save up for an entire replacement and also change out the exhaust manifolds for some headers. If you're looking to improve sound and add some improvement for performance, then axle backs will help and your next step will want to be on the intake side. Cat backs are good, but I'm not all that convinced you'd see huge gains for the added time and money on our cars. A full swap is where the real gain is. Again - your expectation should drive your choice.

For me, a daily driver was more important than a track warrior, so I opted for a set of Borla axle backs and put in a CAI with a Bama tune. Woke the engine up from mild to a beast on the road. Felt great to hear again the sound of tires chirping while gears shift. Was enough for me. You can always start out the same and build it up as you go. There's a lot of upgrades from the block back that gives you lots of choices. If you're around any Mustang clubs you should hook up and see what others have done too. Opinions are good, but seeing and hearing is always better.

Good luck!

Good Answer thanks man I think that the axle back seems smartest for me at the time i believe the exhaust manifold is 2.5 anyways

Far be it from me to discourage the fitment of bigger pipes but Flowmaster as an example rates a 2.5 dual exhaust as being able to handle up to 500hp (250 per pipe) and a 3.0 system up to 600hp with a 2.25 system being able to handle up to 320hp and a 2.0" system able to handle 200 hp.

The only other observation I can offer is that the 2010+ GT500's went to a 2.75" system and only picked up 10 horsepower.

But the x-pipe kit comes with 3" pipes that's why I would go that route
