Best gears?
I'm looking to get a set of gears in the next month. Still undecided between 3:73 or 4:10's. I plan on going with a Saleen supercharger by this time next year!! So with that being said what would be my best option and I hear different things about gear whines from different brands. Any all help would be very much appreciated!
Thank You
Thank You
The consensus is FRPP gears do not tend to whine and Motive tend to be whine prone.
I've always heard to go with a lower (numerically) gear when adding lots of power (SC, turbo, etc.). With the added torque multiplication of the higher gear you may just blow the tires off (unless you have enough tire to support it).
I would go with the 3.73s if your stuck between the two and going with a poweradder in the future. My 2 cents.

Actually FRPP makes two different sets of 4.10 gears with the part number that ends in an A (M-4209-G410A) being Ford manufactured and the other part number ending in M being motive mfg. (M-4208-G410M)

if it's a street car, 4.10's and the blower will probably be over kill. WOT in 1st or 2nd gear with my car just blows the tires away with 4.10's. Granted I still have factory spec tires.
Brenspeed has Motive 3:90 gears but I haven't heard anything good about Motive gears. They must be alright or I don't think that Brenspeed would sell them. I notice that their 4:10's are Motive also.
I asked a similar question recently and got some good info:

Just an idea... get the 4.10s now so you can enjoy them, then later on when you bolt on the supercharger switch to a taller (and wider) rear tire. I'm planning on going with Nitto 555s in 295/45R18

I would do the blower first, run it at the track and on the street a few times, THEN decide on what you want the car to do and what gears to use. Once you add FI power, you don't need to have to shift so much to actually make the car quicker like you do when N/A. The stock 3:55's are not that bad a choice when the motor makes big power. You choose gear ratios to compliment the engine's power band and its intended use. It's kinda silly to modify it now when you essentially are going to have a different engine next year.
I have 4.10's with a blower and never looked back. I have BFG KDW's 285-40-18 on the back and they're ok on the street. Like KEYSTONE said, you can always switch to a taller tire. Nitto makes a 305-45-18 that I believe is a 28.8" tire which would make your gearing close to 3.90.
If you already have 3.55 gears, you won't notice that much difference if you switch to 3.73. If your gears are 3.31, 3.73 might not be too bad. If I had it to do all over again, I'd still get the 4.10s. I love the neck snapping torque off the line!

+1 on the FRPP gears. I have two vehicles that have 8.8" diffs. I installed a set of 4.10 FRPP "A" gears in one of my vehicles over two months ago. Will do the other soon. They were VERY easy to setup because Ford's production tolerances on these gears are very very precise. They are super quiet also. The contact pattern was bang on with the first attempt and the backlash was perfect also. I'd highly recomend the FRPP "A" gearset.
FRPP 3.73
My friend tried the Motive 3.90's. He went back and forth with Motive (they actually worked with him in trying to resolve the problem), installed and reinstalled like 6 times and finally had a professional installation done. He just couldn't get rid of the whine. Then he installed FRPP 4.10's and they were perfect, no whine at all.
I had FRPP 4.10's on my Saleen supercharged S197. I thought it was a bit much. Flooring it in 1st was dangerous and flooring it in 2nd was a gamble (depending on the road surface and RPM at time of pedal stabbing).
