Bamachips 93 Octane Tunes

I just purchased JLT Intake and Xcalibrator 2 COMBO for my Mustang through Doug. Like an idiot, I told him to write these tunes for 93 octane without really investigating what fuel Indiana has. I then found out in Indiana we only have 92 octane. I am really worried that if I run the 93 w/ 92 octane that I could hurt my engine. Is this something I should be worried about?

I left Doug an email and voice mail the next day after placing the order but never received a response. Doug went ahead and sent the tuner with the 93 octane tunes. I also just sent him this same email and hope he will get back with me.

Tell me what you think:
  • Will 92 make that much difference instead of 93?
  • Has anyone taken a trip across the states with a 93 tune and had to pump in 91? If so, did you notice any difference?

I was wondering this exact same thing. I would for sure not run a 93 tune on 91. If it was a conervative 93 tune then i would think you would be totally fine on 92 but i would talk to my tuner first.

I would see if you could send the tuner back and have him load 91 Tunes on instead of 93 then just run the 91 tunes with 92 octane.

It will probably ping, he can send you new tunes via e-mail so you can download them yourself , this way you won't have to send back the tuner. The only thing different will be a slight decrease in the timing.

Get some Torco octane booster and use that till Doug sends you the new tunes.

DO NOT ADD OCTANE BOOSTER TO THE S197!!!
It tends to foul the spark plugs, which then have to be replaced.

Doesn't altitude affect the octane ratings? That's why you see regular as 85 octane in the mountains and stuff like that? Shouldn't hurt to try the 93 tune on 92. If it pings, send it back, if it doesn't ping, have fun.

Torco is very different from the stuff you see at Auto Zone. Torco Accelerator Unleaded Race Fuel Additive is the real thing and is being used by many people for both temporary racing use and daily long term use. One 32oz can will raise 20 gal of 92 octane gas to about 96 octane.

Indiana has 93 Octane available at most of the Name Brand stations. Shell, BP, etc... Sunoco even has 94 Octane if you want a little cushion.

This post is nearly a week old and I have replied to an email about it. Just let me know if you have ANY problems with any tunes you get from me and I'll gladly fix it for you or if you're just not happy then I will issue you a refund.

Thanks, Doug.

Can't you use your tuner to adjust the global spark advance? That should lower your octane requirement.

Don't quote me, but i think it works like this for the Mustang GT:
Remove 2 degrees to lower your octane requirement from 93 to 91
Remove 1 degree to lower the octane requirement from 93 to 92

Hopefully someone will chime in and either verify this or refute it.

Editted: I didn't see Doug had already replied.

You can but that's just not the best way to do it when you have placed a new order for an X-calibrator. I dont even like to adjust tire or gear ratio's that way on my customers tuners. If you have a difference then just let me know and I'll gladly make the changes and email them to you.

But yes, remove 2-4 degree's will reduce you from a 93 to a 91 tune but on my 91 tunes I dont take it out as much down low as I do uptop so this will make it safe but the best way is to contact your dealer.

Thanks, Doug.
