I've searched over and over and I couldn't find much about auto owners w/ 3.73 gears. There are tons of threads on 4.10's. I was advised by Lidio (Alt. Auto.), my local Ford service manager, and a local shop not to put 4.10's in my 06 automatic gt. They all said "do what you want" but strongly advised not to do it. They said 3.73's are the way to go in the auto. Auto owners w/ 3.73's please respond.......are you happy with them? was is a waste of money? if you had it to do over again would you? I know what you 4.10 guys are gonna say, and I wanted 4.10's, but I don't want problems down the road.

I've had them for 2 weeks now and think their worth it. They are ford gears and it's a little louder then stock had them installed by the dealer I bought it at Sutton ford. You will have traction problems. I have a JLT2 CAI and the Bamachip 93 tune, TCI 3000 stall. 275/40 /18 Falkens all around. I can not brake torque at all just flooring it seems to get the best times after the tires are warmed up. Best 0-60 with g-tech has been 4.89sec.
Didn't test it before all the mods so can't compare times. My rpm is 2000 at 60mph.

ok forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what do you mean by traction problems? Do you mean the tires break loose easier from take off? Thanks for the reply and info by the way.

Yes, tires break loose alot easier. I have the car lowered an 1" and CHE lower contol arm reposition brackets and adj. upper control arm.
It helps out alot but the torque converter really changes the car. I have been able to get it to where it dosen't break loose off the line with 26psi in the tires and no brake torqueing. I would not recommend anything higher then 3.73 numerically if you plan any future power mods and the rpms are just right for comfortable cruising.

dude, there are reasons why so many people do 4.10 gear sets even in this s197 platform. We practice in experience and your people opinions are based on theory. They arent wrong by any means but come on, most of us here with the 4.10 gears are going to the track with blowers, turbos and nitrous oxide as power adders. We are also offsetting the 4.10s a bit by going to a taller tire.

There is nothing wrong with going to a 4.10 gear set even if Master Lidio says its too much. In my experience, I could say otherwise.

On second thought, I think Rob should just get the 3.73s.

I got 'em in my automatic and love them...

4.10s would be too much with my supercharger so 3.73s are the ticket...

Two steps up from the stock 3.31 gear should be enough to give you much better exceleration...

Three steps up and you will spin your way through life...

Got extra money for tires. You'll need 'em with the 4.10s in an automatic...

Hey Marsbar and Disco Dave, Thanks for your honest opinions and sharing your experiences. I appreciate it. I'm not a track guy and won't be adding a turbo, or a blower or anything other than whats on my list of mods. My car basically gets driven on the weekends during nice weather. I just want a little more "umph" during acceleration.

If it is just a weekend car, get the 4.10s. Listen to Don and Dan. They have both "been there and done that". It will definitely give you the "UMPH" that you are looking for.

I went with 3.73 and have no problems, dropped 2/10 of my et and i know i can do better if i didnt have crappy pirelli's. I drive on the highway at 80 and my rpms are at 2600. I know if i went 4.10 they would be at 3000, on my way home yesterda i was at 90 cruising, my rpms were at 3000 and i could just see my needle slowly moving down, so im happy i didnt go with the 4.10s but if gas mileage isnt a concern go 4.10

Rob,

Have an auto also, with the exact tire size you have (255/45/18) for the street, and I have 4.10's and do 2900 rpm at 80mph. Gas mileage went down 1 mph. Seeing how yours is a weekend car, I would just go with the 4.10's and be done with it. Consider what future mods you may do. I would consider 3.73's if your are going to go with a power adder and go with a short drag tire (like a M/T 275/40/17). But in earlier posts it seemed like this was something you are not going to do.

The only thing that puzzles me is in the first post, the ford service person I guess was implying that with the 4.10's you would have problems. Did he give you any reasons why not to do it? Many people have 4.10's in autos with no problems (including myself), so don't let that effect your decision.
