I just got off the phone with one of the Tech's at Lentech. The future looks pretty dim from his point of view. He said not to expect this tranny to nandle more than 450HP at the flywheel. What they are working on now is a converter and an input shaft that may go into production at the end of this summer. He said they havn't done any testing of the stock converter but feels it stalla somewhere around 2000 to 2200 rpm's. They will only be able to increase the stall slightly by about 500 rpm's before it interferes with the PCM (torque management). He confirmed that there is no valve body in this tranny. All the shifting is controlled by the PCM sending pulses to the solenoids in the tranny. So it looks like the package from Alternative Auto is the best we'll see for this tranny. I can only hope that the 07 Cobra comes out with an auto tranny option thats much stouter than the one we have now.
man that stinks. i acutally called them this morning looking for the same info as you, waiting for a return call. my plan has been to install a c-4 eventually but i was very interested in the lentech if it was an option.

Does anyone know when Alternative Auto will have a tune that supports other intakes, like the MMR intake? And what about their torque converter? I couldn't find it on their site? Is it available yet, and if not... anyone know when?

Let me get this right. You guys are upset because the trans is only expected to handle 400-450hp.

I guess the ability to handle 100-150hp more than the original design is now considered a design flaw?

I would be very happy with 400-450hp in this car....

I guess I am missing somthing....

I think the ones who want more are wanting a supercharger in the future. And of course, you don't want to put 400-450 HP into a car that has a transmission that can handle 400-450 HP. You need at least 10-15% more just to be safe. So, if you want a supercharger or something like that that will get you close to 500 HP, it's good to have a tranny that can handle 600-700 HP.

I personally am happy with the stock tranny. I'm just doing minor bolt-ons and will be happy if I reach 375 HP at the flywheel.

Performance Automatic has a trans in house that they will be using for R&D. Len @ Lentech was going to develop an input shaft for the trans but he feels it will be too expensive for the average enthusiast for him to proceed further.

FYI ... my car will used as a magazine project car that will explore how much performance we can get out of an 05 Automatic.

it just depends on what you want out of your car. those power levels are fine for your average 12-13 second street warrior and occasional track warrior. i ordered mine (deluxe, auto, no spoiler) specifically for drag racing. the stock tranny in this car doesn't stand a chance of surviving what i'll throw at it over the next year or too. people like the lentech's cause they can handle race track power and abuse and be completely streetable with the overdrive gear and such. so basically the racers are going to have to put a c-4 in and that can seriously limit the street usage of your car if thats a concern.

I see,

I personally do not know of a stock trans that can handle more than 450hp ( most could not handle 300hp ). I would assume that if you want a full track race car, a full race prepped 3 or 4 speed auto would be necessary for this type of application.

I personally cannot see anything over 400hp of much use in a street application due to the need for more rubber on the pavement to hold traction.

However, 450+hp does sound cool....

well i just got off the phone with lentech my self. very interesting conversation, i would like to talk to performance automatic and some others as well. if the information i received is accurate, it was a real head scratcher for me and my plans for the car :bang: we talked about way to much to type everything but this is the impression i got...

1 the factory auto is not going to take a whole lot. the input shaft is VERY small and so are the clutches. naturally aspirated with some bolt-ons street/strip setup should hold up ok but thats about it. if the time and money was spent on trying to make the tranny better it could be done but it's not likely and surely wouldn't be for quite some time if and when that would happen.

2 with the way an auto car is setup electronically (computer/wiring etc), you would be much better off starting with a 5 speed manual car and then swapping in a 4r70w or c-4. it's still going to take some work but initially sounds like that would be the best way to start out if an auto is in the future for your car.

all im doing is repeating what i was told, everyone is certainly entitled to there own opinions. now im forced to make a decision before my car gets built. i would hate to spend $1k on the auto option to find out it would have been cheaper and easier if i would have just got the stick and then did an auto swap down the road when i really needed it

hope this helps some

doesn't look good :bang: he thinks it would be much harder, time consuming and more money to go from the factory 5-speed auto to a 4r70w. again this is just what im told, he could be totally wrong...it's too early to tell.

i was under the impression that if you want an auto car eventually you are always better off to start with one.....maybe that not the case with these new cars and there difficult computer system :bang:

That is about what I have heard as well. The new auto seems to be limited to about 400hp to keep it safe. I talked to the saleen boys and tha is about all they recomended you throw at the new auto....

However, they were more concerned about heat dissipation than they were with the input shaft....

The engine CPU in the auto stangs is married to another cpu for the trans. These two work together for improve the shifting speed and reliability. I heard that the new cpu info transfer rate is nearly 100 times fsater than the older models.

Trying to fake out the new engine CPU will be a difficult task.... It may require that you get a CPU for the stick first....

Yes I've heard that about getting a computer for a stick first. Time will tell though just like everything else on this car. I'm sure if you want to change it there will be a way...I have a call into SCT about it, and he sent an email to one of is engineers. I'll call them back Friday for an answer.

See I'm glad I started this thread. Hopefully this information will save some people some money in the future. The rule of thumb then is if you can be happy with a mild street car the stock trans will do, if you want an all out strip car your better off getting a stick and then swapping for an auto trans like a C4 or a built AOD. I just posted in the other thread about auto's that you would need to swap ecu's with a manual car before swapping out the stock trans. Can we make this thread a sticky as it contains some valuable info regarding modding the automatic transmission cars???
