Am I gonna have any problems running mufflerless in California?

I had SLP loudmouths but the front hanger on the left one broke so I had to take them off and send them in for another set so im running mufflerless for about a week or two till I get another set in. So i was wondering am I gonna have any problem if a cop gets behind me and sees those two massive empty holes back there?

They could pull you over for them being too loud. But I don't think it is illegal to have no muuflers on the car. Now cats is a different story.

I don't know, but all these threads regarding legality in Cali sure make me glad I don't live there.

You need a muffler, but hey.. I drove with an open downpipe with NO exhaust for a few miles to a muffler shop so they could weld me up a pipe that reached from my downpipe to the exhaust (about 2 feet)....

it was the loudest thing in the world but the turbo sounded soooo cool spooling up and down...

take lots of asparin and cross your fingers.

Of course you're asking for trouble! Why can't you spend the 30 minutes to put the stock cans on while you wait for the SLP's?

You want an illegal exhaust modification ticket? How about noise pollution?

You live in the Bay man, you should know better.

I got a $467 fine that I'm finally going to court on Monday about for Exhaust/Smog violations.

You may get pulled over and get cited for it but it will only be a fix it ticket. Don't you have the stock mufflers? This is why i always keep stock parts things fail and sometimes you still need the car. Having the stock parts allows you to keep going. Don't drive with your head up your *** and you will be fine most likely

Well that referance is more related to San Fran and Berkely than Nor Cal. And the most north point of Norcal is actually mostly Rednecks so you have no idea what your talking about.
That would be like me saying So Cal is all Mexicans

o6gt4rad, not to get off topic to much, but as a southern boy down here in Georgia I would love to know your definition of redneck. I have a feeling it is a little different from mine. Just having fun here, not trying to cross any politically incorrect lines.

Fairly uncalled for I would say

Wise decision putting the mufflers back on. No reason to risk a ticket and like Nick said it could be very expensive!

Kind of ironic though.When I was a kid back in the early(hu mmm)) 60's we on the east coast wished we lived in California because they got away with everything.How time have changed.

Sorry not going to discuss it here. But i would call myself a Redneck. And to me it has a very broad meaning. As for being politically correct, well i am sick and tired of that.

CHP Exhaust Noise Guidelines at a Glance Responding to complaints from SEMA and custom exhaust system manufacturers, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has issued a new bulletin clarifying state exhaust noise regulations. The Bulletin (CHP Information Bulletin 98-100) contains the following information:
  • Contrary to some citations issued recently, exhaust modifications that increase noise are not automatically illegal in California. The regulations allow exhaust modifications increasing noise up to 95 decibels.
  • The California Vehicle Code does not prohibit exhaust modifications, modified tailpipes or muffler tips which increase exhaust noise levels over that of factory-installed systems as long as noise levels do not exceed the 95-decibel limit.
  • Because California does not provide for practical roadside testing, enforcement stops will continue to require an officer's informed evaluation. CHP advises officers to issue "Notice to Correct" (fix-it tickets) when vehicles are judged in violation of the noise standard. This procedure will give vehicle owners an opportunity to nullify the citation by presenting materials demonstrating that the vehicle complies with the 95-decibel standard.
  • Although CHP lacks resources to verify manufacturer claims, it is aware that many custom exhausxt systems meet the 95-decibel standard. The bulletin advises that police officers consider specialty equipment documentation when evaluating exhaust systems for excessive noise, both during an enforcement stop and when clearing a ticket.
  • California exhaust noise regulations apply statewide, prohibiting local authorities from adopting local noise limitations that differ from the state regulation. Citations issued under differing local ordinances are invalid
Excessive noise is primarily a nuisance issue rather than a safety concern, and determination of excessive noise is subjective. For this reason, enforcement personnel are to exercise sound professional judgment in making a determination of violation. The following guidelines and attached question and answer sheet (Attachment A) provide guidance to enforcement personnel regarding appropriate enforcement procedures.
Enforcement Guidelines
The only drivers who should be cited are those whose vehicles:
1. Are not equipped with a muffler;
2. Clearly emit an offensive, harsh, excessive noise, or;
3. Have a clearly defective exhaust system (holes, leaks, etc.).

And here is the link to the second part if you care to read more.
