I bought an air filter at Auto Zone for my car and it was $27. My Explorer that has almost the same size filter is only $12, (the same brand).

I heard Ford is nearly $40. What gives?

Fram doesn't even have it in the Auto Zone catalog (in the store).

I got the K&N drop-in for less than $40. No sense paying for a filter over and over again at the ridiculous Fram/Motorcraft pricing when you can get a lifetime filter. Good luck!

I bought the K&N drop-in air filter from Sutton High Performance ( http://www.suttonhp.com/ ) for $39.95.
There are however many more suppliers out there, just google it.

I just queried the part number for the filter on eBay. Many came up with prices all over the place. Under $40 should be right, so don't pay more than that or you're getting ripped off.

K&N has a cleaning kit you buy for about $30. Here is how it gets cleaned:

Hope this answers your question!
