Aftermarket throttle body Yea or nay

I am curious as to the worth of a replacement throttle body for a N/A car? Is there a noticeable benefit from this mod? I am curious of others experiences with this. As of now I have the mods listed in my signature and am thinking of doing a cam install in the following months and I know I will switch the TB at the time of the cam install, but before the cams is it necessary/worth it. In other words do you get any noticable gains?

Not worth it NA, atleast until you do the cams.

Check out the tech section at Brenspeed: www.brenspeed.com They had good luck with a TB after the cam install.

Yeah I read the Tech from Brenspeed Good article! Amazing how much power there is locked up in this little 4.6... Thanks for the input Tom.

Anyone else have any experience with this mod?

Hey tom I see in your signature PRO50 do you have their shifter? I was also curious about that mod. I am torn between the TRI-AX and the PRO50 How do you like it?

my guess is you won't see much difference N/A, even with cams (I haven't seen many N/A 05+ mustangs getting 350 to the ground?). Just about every car I have owned, I have looked into getting a larger TB, and it usually ends up that unless you are putting down alot of power, the TB doesn't make much difference at all.

Thanks for the info Error404. It looks like the consensus is no gain with the TB until SC or perhaps larger cams. So I think I'll look for somthing else to focus on.

We've had so many freakin problems with NA cars and TB. We've had to restock installed BBK 62mm's numerous times, even after warning the customer. The car goes into failsafe mode, and throws different throttle codes. We've set the spring tension a million different ways, and had no luck. However, when the car is FI, it bolts right on, no problems. I cant for the life of me understand why the drive by wire assembly is so touchy.

i can tell you first hand that installing one of these could be a PAIN.. a 2 minutes bolt on, followed by days of falling into failsafe mode and trying to figure out what's going on :S

eventually once you get it to work, all you get is a better response.. but not a single horse.
eventually i got a better result with a tune from Bamachips and the stock TB!

not worth the money IMO on N/A or even forced induction upto 12PSI or so.

I love the Pro5.0. If you're comparing it to the Steeda TriAx, you can probably stop comparing because the two are very very similar. I went with the Pro5.0 because I got a better price and I do know of some people with the Steeda that think its kinda noisy. Anyway do a search when you have time there's lots of info on each one.

I bolted on Bamachip Doug's TB on my car and we ran it on the dyno. Made 1 hp more, which could have easily been a variation between runs. He ended having tons of trouble with it, I think it even left him stranded once, and I think he eventually went back to the stocker. There is a thread on it here somewhere. With his tune, throttle response was MUCH better anyway with the stock TB.

All polished, it looked pretty good though. The stocker is just plain ugly.

To coment on the Pro 5.0 and Steeda, like Tom said, they are pretty much the same. I've had the Hurst and the 5.0 now. Tons of threads on here, but I'll just say the 5.0 is much noisier and has a much longer throw, and I'll be trying out the MGW shifter as soon as the start shipping them out. Hopefully, it will be my last shifter.

Long story
Hurst too notchy, lock out in 2nd to 3rd shifts
Pro 5.0 too noisey, vibrates, squeaks going into 5th or reverse, long throw, harder to get into 5th or reverse.

if you want a nice looking throttle body then get some one to powdercoat or polish a stock one, AM throttle bodies are just paperweights, even KB and Whipple say they do not recommend an aftermarket throttle body for their systems or even spacers for that matter

Anyone tried to bake/powdercoat a stock TB? Could the heat hurt any rubber o rings or deform any parts?

Thanks for all the info guys. I like the idea of having the stock tb polished or coated. Might be a good seller for some of the aftermarket companies out there ......Tillman?

If someone sends me their throttle body, I'll black or silver or whatever color powdercoat, or polish for them. It takes 2-3 days for me. Just realize your car will be TB-less for shipping time to me, shipping time back and 2-3 days in between.

LOL

I could powdercoat them for probably like 45 bucks or something. Polishing might be pricey, let me see and I'll reply back.

THANKS
