? about octane and brenspeed

I just recieved my sct-2 back from brenspeed today with some newer tunes. I live in oregon and we only go up to 92 octane and I wrote tthat on the list I sent but on the sct it goes, 87,89 and93. Is it safe to use the 93? I am going to call him tomorrow and see for sure. I had to try it and it was a night and day difference from his original tune from about a year ago. Just wanted some opinions, thanks, Brad.

Just see what Brent or Dave says. I would think you'll probably be ok, but ask one of them. Tell them Tom from Decatur says hello!

I agree you should be ok but best to speak with Brent. I myself got a 87,89, and 91 Octane tunes from him due to only having 91 Ocatne her in the Republic of California. Also if you really want to keep the 93 tune you could always buy this. I actually considered going this route but it is just to much hassle to keep a can in teh car and since it is mainly the wqifes car so to speak she would never want to have to pour the stuff in when getting gas.

I just ordered my tunes/tuner Friday, so started running my gas down to get ready for the arrival of the tuner this weekend. I started with 87, ran it down to 20 miles, put 5 gallons in, and repeated the process. That way I figured when my tuner arrives I can gas her up with 93 and immediately load the tune….

I am now running the stock tune with 93 octane gas. This morning, when downshifting, the tires actually chirped because I think the engine bogged on me. That has never happened before. Again on the way home, I gave her some gas in 1’st once I was around a corner and the engine bogged really badly until I hit about 4500 RPM. There is no doubt in my mind the car does not run right with 93 octane on a stock tune.

Now I have to decide if I want to gas her up with 87 and try again once the tuner actually gets here. Sigh…

i would not use the 93 tune with 92..you may ruin vital engine components..Rule of thumb is you can use higher octane with a lower tune but not vice versa.

Yep i agree. I am running it now and I was amazed at the differance in the way the car performs. I can now chirp the tires with the 1-2 shift. I can only imagine what the 91 Tune i got is going to be like.

I received a reply back from Brent White at Brenspeed regarding the Race tunes everyone is raving about from Bamachips..Here 's his reply
"Chuck we don’t market our tunes as race or torque. It is not accurate. Our tunes make peak torque at 4300 and peak HP at 6100. It would make zero sense to give you a tune with less torque and call it power tune and then a tune with less power and call it a torque tune. It is a marketing thing".

Very interesting Any thoughts or comments?

I emailed Brent at Brenspeed asking a similar question. I have been running the 93 tune with 91 gas since I can't get it in Tulsa. He told me that as long as I don't hear any pinging I am ok. I have not heard ANY pinging whatsoever. Brent attributed this to my knock sensors handling the timing well enough to not give me any problems. He did say that most people cannot get away with doing this. So...my suggestion is to give it a try and if it pings then change it back to the 91. Good luck and hope this helps.

I'm trying to decide right now who I should purchase from Brent or Doug?
When I saw that Doug has race and torque tunes I thought that maybe thats why his C&L and SCT-X2 combo cost more! I'm confused! What are the differences between the race and torque tunes are they better then the tunes from Brent?

I don't think you can really go wrong with either tuner. Here's my advice- buy the cheaper combo and pocket the difference. Either way you'll be impressed. I personnally am partial to Brenspeed, and I've tried tunes from both. I also have never heard about Brent bs'ing anyone, and his comment about torque, power, and race tunes makes sense to me.

Very happy with Brenspeed as well!

I hit the dyno again Sunday.

All numbers are weather corrected on a Mustang Dyno.

For a refresher, my results from back in June with only the Flowmaster mufflers changed from completely stock…
261.4 rwhp and 276.7 rwtq
Best 1/4 mile at GLD in Wisconsin 13.678 at 103.3 mph (stock street radials)

After the cold air intake and Brenspeed 93 octane tune…
281.1 rwhp and 297.5 rwtq
Best 1/4 mile at GLD in Wisconsin 13.349 at 105 mph (stock street radials)

I also had my A/F ratio measured at the tail pipe with the C&L and tune. Idle was right in around 14:1. During the dyno pulls under acceleration, the average fell to a rich but safe 12.6:1.

Ha! Tom doesn't play on the home team, nor is he a switch-hitter, and he is married to a beautiful female wife.
