I've always used 10w 40 non-synthetic oil in my V-8 engines - even though the manual always called for 10w 30. I just sold the '94 TBird with 228,000 miles on the ode and it was still going at least 2,000 miles to a quart - no bearing or other problems - engine never torn down. Drove it mostly highway.

However, Ford may have made changes in the new 4.6 and certainly warranty specifications are a major consideration.

I also have several Corvettes and all are happy with the factory-recommended 5w 30 Mobil 1. I am strongly considering changing to Mobil 1 for the '05 Mustang after 5,000 miles or so. Viscosity is still an open question.

Does anybody know the real reason(s) Ford changed the spec. on oil?

The older 4.6 engines used 5W30 oil. Now they specify 5W20 oil.
The clearances in the engine are exactly the same.

I just looked at the cap on the oil fill tube on my V6 and it says 5W-30,haven't read the book yet but if the cap says 5W-30 shouldn't that be correct.Haven't changed my oil yet, bought the car in November but still only has 450 miles on it.I am going to change it this week and I believe I will put 5W-30 in it.

Use what the Factory Recommends! We had a New Crown Vic come in with a Rod out the side of the block after Walmart put in 15w40!

Look toward the end of the owner's manual. It says the recommended oil is Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil - not plain old dino oil. Unless someone proves otherwise, it stands to reason that is the oil used for the factory fill.

Looking at the Motorcraft web site, http://www.motorcraft.com/products.a...M=15&PageID=74
they don't specify what percentage of synthetic the blend is.

This is really driving me nuts, from what I can see, the owners manual is calling out 5w20 for the V-8 and 5w-30 for the V-6( pgs 194-198). Now for the dilemna, they are calling out motorcraft SAE 5w-20 and when you go to the motorcraft site, they describe this oil as a blend. Can anybody come up with the 100% correct answer for me? What is in the car from the factory, blend or straight oil, and are they indeed recommending a blend as the regular oil to be used in this car??? :bang:
I will be receiving my car wthin a few days and I want to buy a case of oil and some filters because of the way I will be breaking it in ( full on break in with 2 very early oil changes).

Does anybody know how to look up this spec, maybe this will give us the answer we are looking for..."To protect your engine’s warranty use Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 or an
equivalent 5W-20 oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C930-A"

The new Mobil1 5W20 meets that Ford spec:

Yes, see my previous post in this thread. It says in the owner's manual that a Synthetic Blend 5W-20 is recommended. It's in the Refill Capacities table in the Maintenance and Specifications section of the manual. Quote:

"Engine Oil
(includes filter
change)
Motorcraft SAE
5W-20 Premium
Synthetic Blend
Motor Oil (US)
Motorcraft SAE
5W-20 Super
Premium Motor
Oil (Canada)
4.6L V8 engine 6.0 quarts (5.7 L)"

Here's a link to the manual where you can read it yourself:

You have only put 450 miles on it and you have had it since November? It says you are in Orlando, is that accurate or am I missing something. Why aren't you driving it?

On page 196 of the owners manual, it says this:

To protect your engine’s warranty use Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 or an
equivalent 5W-20 oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C930-A
. SAE
5W-20 oil provides optimum fuel economy and durability
performance meeting all requirements for your vehicle’s engine.
As long as the oil meets that Ford spec and is the correct weight, it shouldn't matter whether it's synthetic or conventional.

My feeling on this topic is simple. Why mess with it? Oil is basically oil. Ford says use 5/20, use 5/20. To keep the warranty in tact why not do it? Why bother changing anyway? There won't be any real performance difference, and as far as life goes, if a synthetic engine goes 180,000 as opposed to 150,000 big deal. When you get that long in the tooth, you'll want to freshen it up anyway.

just kidding.... don't do that.

I don't think that's been determined yet. The owners manual recommends a Motorcraft 5W20 blend but it doesn't say that's what comes in it from the factory. It could but we have nothing definite that states it for a fact.

Exactly my point, that is what I want to know for sure. I want to do the hard break in and dump the oil after 20 to 50 miles, but I would want to put in exactly what came in it before I change to what the factory recommends at the recommended milage for the first oil change. Can anybody in the know get that answer for us!

The ONLY 5W-20 oil listed on the Motorcraft Oil and Lubrication website is the Premium Synthetic Blend.

http://www.motorcraft.com/products.a...M=15&PageID=74

If you're planning on using Motorcraft 5W-20 oil for your first change, apparently Synthetic Blend is the only choice you have... Makes the choice easy, doesn't it? B)
