5 speed or Auto?
I have an auto, I generally hate auto's. Very occasionally I find myself really wanting to row my own. But generally I've very happy with the tranny. That said, the bamachips tune really made the shifts snappy as hell.
This is really a personal preference thing because if you made this a poll I'd bet it ends up close to 50/50. Some are die-hards on manual trans for sporting vehicles like me and others don't think it's that important.
I've been driving manual trans cars off and on for going on 25 years and I've had this GT for almost a year now stop and go Chicagoland traffic and all and you couldn't give me an auto GT. Well you could but I'd immediately trade it.

I am going to get a new mustang gt within a few weeks. But I still cant decide on stick or auto! I have never driven stick and live in a stop go city. Alot of people have told me that a stick in this type of driving is hell. Im not going to be racing or anything but all my buddies think that if i get this bad boy and its an auto im a puss. So what do you think? Any info on the 5 speed transmission and how it handles and what not would be appreciated.

The auto trans has been improved quite a bit and can be tuned quite well. I have the auto and still enjoy driving the car, you can shift manually although with a custom tune they will shift better on there own in a 1/4 mile. I know of a guy on another forum running in the 10's on an auto tranny(granted its a 4r70w).
It's certainly not about being faster because they have auto/manumatics that shift much faster than we can. In fact aren't a lot of drag cars automatic?
I think it's all about feeling more connected in a sense to the car. You just feel like you are more in control with a manual. In a car like this that's what I am looking for.

To me it's a sports car and that denotes to a manual transmission. Upshifting an downshifting is part of the ritual of driving a car with power for me. The sounds of the engine and the exhaust get the juices flowing esp when you sit at a desk all day. Been shifting gears since 1960 and almost always have driven a manual.
I would agree with that which is why I sometimes shift manually, not to mention if your canyon running or running a road course you dont want it to downshift into a cruising gear just because you let off of the throttle which an auto(any auto for that matter) will do.

Yup... a large percentage of them are. And for good reason.
First of all, I don't consider mine a "sports" car... it's a "muscle" car meant to be used for drag racing on the weekends. To me, that denotes a properly equipped automatic transmission. Sports cars are little 2-seater Euro thingies that sound funny.
And it's only "girly" when my wife is driving (and she could kick your azz on the dragstrip

I agree in that this is a muscle car but it is better to shift manually when running a road course(I like both the 1/4 and some fun canyon running sometimes). Now dont get me wrong I'm not advocating the manual tranny when saying that in fact I think you gives you more options when driving in different situations.
Mostly I guess it's a matter of opinion but to say an auto is a lesser car or that a sports car requires a manual trans is just plain naive. I have no problem brining my auto stang against anyones manual any day and it will be your mods or experience that beats me not the fact you have a manual tranny.

Exactly, which is part of the reason I have an auto, the other being my wife and the fact that(I know Ive said this) you CAN shift an auto manually if so inclined or you can sit back and cruise, really the only difference in my mind is no clutch when shifting if tuned right. I wish thier were more aftermarket options for the auto tranny and I know they are coming slowly, I looked at an autoshifter from B&M that says it's for the 05-06 mustang but is kinda ugly IMO and says its for the 5r55e not our 5r55s(not sure of the difference between the two)

I do a lot of driving and a good portion or it stop and go. Another thing you wont be able to do with the stick is balance 4 coffees on the console while on a Starbucks run in stop and go traffic..
If you do go with the auto the first and immediate modification should be a tune to get rid of the eternity it takes to down shift putting it to the floor. That being said even in stock form it is one slock trans.
Go test drive and auto and a stick and choose what you like.

Actually you put the cup holder on the edge of the passenger seat and shift with your left hand while steadying the cups with your right. Of course you have to steady the steering wheel with a leg, but hey that's all part of the manual trans FUN!
When you slid on the vinyl bench around a corner, you were less likely to spill your beer in your lap.
Now remember kiddies it was legal back then in my state to drive while drinking as long as you didn't get drunk.
