Someone on here had a gear calculator. I couldn't get it to work, but something like this could tell us about our top end. Or maybe Bryan or John can jump in, I'm sure those guy's have hit 150mph! I hit the govener at about 145mph, bye bye stupid govener!! I'd still like to be able to play in that speed range.

Losing top end speed from the gear swap may be a mute point, the car may hit the aerodynamic limit before it tops out in 5th gear.

Depending on the wind conditions it can be a little "eye opening" sometimes at those high speeds.

I encountered the "dancing hood" at 135mph this past weekend. And dance it did! I thought I was going to lose it, it was rocking back and forth so hard.

Just a half hour earlier on another stretch of open desert road I hit the governor at 145mph with no problems.

That is quite a dance! Mine looked like a sidewinder rolling across the desert! That's one of the reasons I installed hood pins. I just don't want to hit 125mph and be redlined.

I hear ya, I don't like the idea of turning nearly 5k at a hundred, and as a fellow Desert Rat you know that's pretty commonplace out here

Actually what I think created that gnarly turbulance was the opposing traffic, I didn't have any opposing traffic on the earlier run. I thought about the hood pins, what I think would be sweet is hood latches like some of the later 60's Shelby's, the kind that looked like ***** that you unscrewed.

I ordered my 4:10's today as well! I'm curious as to how little 1st gear will be used. The guys at the dealership seem to think I will almost lose 1st gear. Any opinions on 1st. I'm also looking for some M/T drag radials. I'm still unsure as to what size. I'm only getting them for the track so I will only be getting the rears and wheels. If anyone could give suggestions as to what size wheel and D/R, I'd appreciate it. I went to the track tonight and launched at around 2500 rpm. It hooked pretty good and bogged a bit. 2.01-60', 13.69-1/4@103.86. I'm at about 6000 rpm in 3rd gear @ the 1/4 mile mark. Will I be getting into 4th gear with the 4:10's? Thanks to all, and I hope this isn't hijacking this thread!

You will not lose first w/4.10s at all....you take it up to 30mph in it so I think its hardly lost. And as far as fourth, will definetlely hit it before the traps.

Who has 1/4 mile numbers with 4.10s? I'm wondering if you are going to be faster than stock, because of the 3-4 shift.

At what MPH does the hood begin to shake? I'm assuming it does this because its made from Aluminum?

They do not VOID the warranty. However, if the repair shop can prove that the repair needed is the result of these changes, they can deny your claim.

Lemme try to answer a few questions I saw....Mine gets about 18-20 mpg on the freeway with the 4.10's....Not great, but decent enough for a muscle car in my humble opinion...gets about 12-14 in the city under some heavy footed action ...Mine turns about 3 grand at 80mph and hits 140 at about 6 grand on the tach.....The car will still make good speed with the new gears, it just works harder when it gets there...Weird how I don't get the hood dance on mine at 125+....just a crazy whistling on my driver window cover deal...By 125 I've killed whatever I was racing anyway so it's more then time to back off. As far as quarter mile times, the Gtimers are showing 13.1 with the mods I have and so is the dyno when it runs a quarter on it.....Bryan's got 13.14 at 106.5 with the same mods I have when they did a 1/4 mile run on the local dyno.....Doesn't take much to kick some major butt with these cars as many are now seeing....Happy modding guys....

The hood starts geting "squirrely" at about 120 mph or so. It also depend's on cross wind's ect. Those speed's generate alot of force. I think that force may have more to do with it than the aluminum it's made out of. The hood flex isn't to bad IMO. The pin's are just a little extra insurance.

Thank's for rolling that all that info together. I've seen it all scattered about, it's great seeing it all in one place

I think the reason you don't get the hood dance is your spoiler!

You've confirmed my suspicions though. That's a little too tall for me, 3.73's might be a nice compromise.

There's always the 3.90's from Motive....Just talked to another TMS'er who asked for my opinions on 3.73's and 4.10's and I told him about them and he picked them up for only 155.00...Nice in between gear for those who want both worlds.....Bryan's running the 4.10 Motive's with no issues so they obviously make a good product....food for thought anyway SixtySix.....

P.S. You talking about my spoiler again? I think it's the extra black paint holding the hood down!

John

I've hit 130 MPH with no hood dance. One other thing is at 80 MPH in 5TH I'm at 2450 or 2500 RPM's with stock gears, so 2750 with 4:10's is not bad.

Just had the gears and tune uploaded at Steen Racing...its like a different car!! If anyone lives in the Hampton Roads area in VA and would like the SCT tune, I worked with a guy named Ed Clark. He stopped by the shop where I had the gears installed and took care of me. actually worked with Steeda recalibrating the Screaming yellow Q, so he is very knowledgable and took the time to show me all the differences the tune made compared to the factory program. I have ordered C&L' s new CAI and was originally going to go with the predator, but it seems it will still be awhile before the predator is available to be shipped with their kit. I decided for them to just send out the CAI w/out the predator b/c Ed said he would have no problem retuning it for the intake system. Vegasjay, if you are reading this, Lee at C&L thought i was you calling from Vegas to check up on the shipping dates. They shipped out the CAI today and I am going to have it dyno tuned with Ed next week with CAI,pullies, charge motion plates, and MAC axle back. I will post up some numbers as soon as I get them
Don't you have to pull the heads to put on the CM plates?!? I hope it adds something for you, it's going to be pricey! :worship:

Those of you worrying about top speed with 4.10s, don't sweat it.

You'll be able to use more of your 5th gear before hitting the aero limit of the car, so that makes up for the higher revs. In the 99-04 cars a lot of people reported *higher* top speeds with 4.10s for this reason.

Swingle do you know off hand if the manual trannies in our GT's are spec'd like the 3550? If so, should the M5 owners expect to see more like 2.75 K at 80mph and about 5K at 145, using 4.10s ? Calculations derived from here
