Question ? for the 3:73 gears folks

How many of you that have gone from the 3:55's to the 3:73's wish you had gone to the 4:10's? How noticable were the 3:73's from the 3:55's?

I had 4:10's but due to a poor installation they failed. I liked the 4:10's BUT I couldn't get any traction in first and always felt the 1st gear was almost useless. I'm thinking about trying a set of 3:73's and with the aluminum drive shaft that might be a good set-up.

I wish there was a good set of 3:90's out there! I think that would be perfect for me~

I too would like to know. This topic has made me wonder if I should go with 373's as well instead of 410's.

First is low to me even with the stock 3.55's. Second and third could be a bit lower but I definately don't want to have the rpms up to high on the highway from 4.10's. 3.73's could be good for me also.

Why not go back to 410s? I would and go to a 28 tire that would give you a final ratio of about 385. Thsi is what I have.

Mongoose-

I am running 255/50-17 wheels and tires and they are 27.03! I'm not really interested in buying new tires and wheels but can you tell me with that combo what my final ratio would be with the 3:73's?

3.73 will have you at 2,000 RPM at 64MPH. 4.10s put you at 2200RPM to reach that same speed. The car loves 1850RPM for fuel mileage. I found with my 3.55s and UDPs I can stretch between 26 and 28 MPG highway at the posted limit.

That said, this car isn't about gas mileage. I also think 4.10s are excessive unless you get the car to hook. Mine wouldn't hook with 4.10s as the 3.55s are just about perfect now.

Your answer lies in where is your mod list going. If you plan to "fix" the suspension to get the 4.10s to hook, then go 4.10. If you plan to S/C, Turbo, or NOS your car, then 4.10s are overkill.

I have an automatic so I went from 3.3 to 3.73 and that was big difference.

I had 3.90 in for a while but those whined like a banshee (Motive of course) - i'll never but Motive ever again.

I got the 373's because that's what I had on my 90' and really liked them. However my 90 had more low end torque and on the 05' I wished I had gone with 410's. That is until today when I dropped the car off at Steeda to get a magnacharger put on and from most posts I read they're the best when you're blown ...

My stock 3:55's with the Saleen s/c were ok but with the current 3:73's - gives me what I wanted in overall performance, etc.
If I was into drag racing as I was in my younger years - the 4:10's would be the way I would go but I would have to spend some $$$ for different tires, etc.

Good deal, man - somehow I had a feeling it was only a matter of time before that Stang went forced induction

Let us know how it goes!

I had 4.10s and I liked them a lot. Then I had a little accident where my rear axle got screwed up. I had to get a new gearset with my new axle. I chose to go with 3.73s because with my current mods I was barely able to lay down the power with the 4.10s.

I really like the 3.73s and I can tell a difference from the 3.55s. They are a little better with gas mileage than the 4.10s. If I knew that I were not going to get any more power mods I would have gone with the 4.10 again but I knew that I would have trouble laying down the power if I got any more power adders. I plan on getting some driveline upgrades and cams in the future so I went with the 3.73s.

So to sum up. If you only have basic mods like intake, tune, exhaust, pulleys, etc.... by all means get the 4.10s. If you are getting a supercharger, I think that 3.73 would be best. If you have a supercharger and you are into drag racing and you have slicks then you may still want 4.10s but if your supercharged car is your daily driver, 3.73 is the way to go.

Keep your comments coming folks. I'm still on the fence about this. I'm leaning towards 3:73's.

I doubt there would be much difference on street tires for me whether it was 3.73s of 4.10s... that's why I decided adding drag radials was a better option.

When I was writing my post I actually thought of you Don. I knew that you would be a good person to ask on this.
From what I could feel, I think there is a big enough difference to go with 3.73. But you are right, the difference is small.
I'll admit though, if you want to blast off the line drag racing, get 4.10s and some wide a$$ drag slicks with a supercharger.

Oh, and by the way Don. I don't think I have talked to you before but I have read a ton of your posts. Your advice has been help before while I've been under the hood. Thanks.

Well I'm still not hearing from the 3:73 guys. Maybe there aren't that many running 3:73's. I know all about what the car feels like with 4:10's.

I feel like I'm the only one on Earth with 3.73s some times. I love em.

If you do not change tire size the gear is what you install. 3:73
There was 6% difference between stock tire and what I have installed so 4:10 -6% = 3:85

I still don't fully understand what my final ratio would be with the tires that I mentioned and the 3:73's? Sorry to be uninformed so enlighten me please.
