My 2005 GT should be here any day now, I'm wondering how I should break in the engine. This is my first Mustang and any advise would be great. I'm in the military overseas in England and I'm not sure if I trust what my friend is telling me to do. Thanks

Drive it hard from the very beginning, the harder you drive it the better it runs

I agree with bigaloz just stay off the red line but dive the crap out of it and let the engine do some of the breaking for you.

Yup! Drive it like you stole it. Change the oil after 20 hard miles and drive some more...

Hey AircraftTech, I live in Cambridge as well! Not military, regular UK resident with a Mustang "thing"

Not Waterbeach by any chance?

What spec are you getting? A few of us are planning on hitting one of the few UK drag strips, let me know if you fancy hooking up.

Most (Majority) of the wear on a new engine will come within the first 20 miles of so. When you run the engine hard for the first 20 miles, the rings have a much better chance of wearing in properly to form a complete seal, the engine parts will have burrs / shavings from the manufacturing process. By the 20 mile mark, these shavings will have contaminated the oil and filter. Better to cahnge it early and get the "bad" things out and run it on new oil afterwards. Once you have driven hard for 20 miles, change the oil. I would suggest a synthetic blend until about 1000 miles then change to full synthetic 5 - 20 after another 3000 / 5000 whichever you prefer. I go every 3000 then change oil and filter.

This is what I did.

Day 1 (19) miles - Drove it really hard, varied RPM's until I got home, but drove it to redline a few times. Hit 125 on the bridge / tunnel once to. Changed the oil to a synthetic blend and new filter.

Day 14 (1020 miles) - Driving normally and cahnge the oild to a full synthetic with new filter.

Day 60 (4035 miles) - Change the oil with full synthetic and new filter. Will be changing again at 7500 miles and every 3000 after this.
