What's this Titan thinkin'?

Cruisin' home at midnight in the '06 and this 4 door Titan is getting jumpy on my left. We get to a red, and no cars are around. I put it in 2nd thinking if he goes atleast I'll give him the jump and make this somewhat fun for me. Light turns green and he takes off, well good to say he didn't get very far, I run it up to 80 and shut it down. No contest. What was he thinkin'?

The same thing the 5.7L Toyota Tundra was thinking that challenged me.
Until he realized that he weighs 5500 lbs.

I thought it was a disease only afflicting people here! You won't believe the number of Titans, Rams, Tundras, and other full size trucks running around with dual 4 inch, crab-eyed exhaust tips thinking they're the fastest thing on the road just because they're big and loud. The sickness seems to be most acute among owners of Titans and Rams in particular. My theory is this: these guys are the ones who "outgrew" their loud and slow fwd import and wanted something with a V8.

Every titan driver in my town seems to think he is Don Garlitz. I have layed waste to SO many of them it is to the point where I sit at the lights and let them get about 8 cars before I even go, and I reel them in and am watching them do the right turn of shame by third gear. Look at them as fodder and you will have SO much fun. I especially like to pull up to the rams and ask all about the hemi before the light turns. And if they don't run after the towing they receive i ask them if it is really a hemi. I am sure I will eventually find one with a nasty souped up diesel that will put me in my place but I love racing sleepers anyway so it is all good.

The nasty souped up diesels are even heavier.
I had a go with one. They are pretty good, but not as quick as they think.
Back in the '60s think about the Cadillac 500 ci engine vs a 302 Mustang.

My 4x4 crewmax (the biggest one) weighs 6,000 lbs after I added leather, sunroof, 20 inch wheels, audio system, etc. It still ran a 14.8 with just intake and catback. There are two wheel drive Tundras out there with the same motor that weigh hundreds of pounds less. Regular cabs are already running 13.9s with just intake and exhaust, and double cabs are pulling 14.4s. There is no tuner available yet, so these trucks are running pig rich. There are also crew cab Titans in the high 13s with bolt-ons and tuners.

I know we're talking about vehicles that are completely different from each other, but please don't underestimate the potential of some of these newer trucks and scoff at their attempts. Modifications can make it a driver's race between a Mustang GT and a lightly modified pick-up truck.

Tis true but it seems the averrage truck owner thinks his set of flowmasters and K&N drop in made him a match for a car. Sounds alot like one of the local guys here that had a 5.3 Chevy single cab with gears headers, FIPK, tune and 100 shot think he could beat my Z when all I had was free mods and a K&N drop in. Big mistake on his part. I have seen many a hopped up diesel hit 12 or lower but they are quite rare even though fairly easy to do. **** thing about a diesel is they can hold about 40+ PSI on stock internals, I know of one featured in a mag that was pushing 50 PSI.

True, true. Also, getting a truck into the low 14s - high 13s is doable with some of the better motors. However, getting into the 12s...you're talking power adders and weight reduction!

Yep. Nowadays it doesn't take much to get just about anything with a Newer designed V8 to get 13's.

I had a Titan for a while. Layed waste to just about any other stock pickup out there except Lightnings and SRT-10's. Humbled many a "it's got a hemi!!" trucks. Then a drunk driver took it out, made it about 3 feet shorter.

So I went and got a Lightning and it seems every SRT (put some even number here) and GTO wants to run me.

Sort of on-topic. My sister's ex bf has a 496cu in Silverado... I think he's over 400hp to the wheels... but my GT is easily faster.

However, his truck doesn't seem much slower even when he's towing something

(oh yeah, his friend challened me to a race in his diesel dodge by saying "I bet your car is faster")

Hey now I've beaten my fair share of trucks.

The most challenging being a Duramax Chevy.

WATCH OUT FOR THOSE DIESELS!!!

Why? Racing is about having fun and improvement. That can be done in a coupe, convertible, sedan, pickup truck, or motorcycle....

Laughing at someone racing their truck is akin to laughing at someone for using their Mustang as a daily driver. Not everyone can buy a specific vehicle for each purpose. If your truck will run 13s or 14s, why not race it?

What about the SVT Lightnings and the Saleen F-150s? Those are trucks.
