0-60 times

Stang: 7.0 seconds
http://www.mpt.org/motorweek/reviews/rt2405.shtml

GTI: 7.1 seconds
http://www.vwfeatures.com/gti.html

SI: 6.8 seconds

Straight line, looks like it will be extremely close, but the SI would win.
On the twisties, my money is on the GTi

The GTI and Mustang have more bottom end than my Si does, but stock to stock I can nudge the GTI. Ive ran a SN-95 V6 (00' I think), and left em in the dust.
Si also has a helical limited slip diff. so it has a bit of advantage off the line and in the twisties. Si is under 2900 pounds...GTI and Stang lose again.

I respect the Si a whole lot, but you have to rev it four times as high to make 2/3rs the torque of the GTI. During slightly hotter than average day-to-day driving, the GTI is a hell of a lot more rewarding, though I'll admit the Si has sharper handling. Plus, turn up the boost a few psi and the GTI has an easy/cheap/reliable 50hp advantage.

Why are you comparing the top performance model of the Golf line and the top performance model of the Civic line with BASE model of the Mustang line, the V6?

Why don't we do it the other way around. Compare the Mustang GT vs the base model VW Golf/Rabbit and the base model Honda Civic ?

Every post you make is the online equivalent of an anus spewing under the distress of dysentery. But seriously, are you really this worthless in real life?

I'm actually a leech of sorts. I pride myself on collecting three different types of social welfare. But this isn't about me. This is about you not understanding why a threeway comparison between ~$21k sport compacts is more relelvant than one involving a $27k musclecar and two $14k economy cars.

As a practicing doctorate in Awesomeology I support the diagnoses of "Kill yourself" and "Dysentary with advanced **** Spewing".

Just telling you all to keep up the good work, and to kill yourselves and/or spew **** leakage appropriately.

Thats true, how would a Golf 2.0 n/a auto go up against a Mustang GT? Do those even make it to 60 at all? What about one of the awesome Civic HX models? I actually might like the Civic Si if it weren't based on an economy car. The only econo box I would contemplate owning would be a Mazda 3.

BTW, I only added the leather package to a 2 door manual GTI= $26,020. If you doll it up a bit it scrapes up against $30k. I think its definitely too nice to be considered a econo box like the Civic though. Still, the GTI is close enough in price its in a Mustang GT's comparison shopping range. I think I have only seen one 07 Civic Si on the road so far.

Is that because you drive with your eyes closed? Or do you just avoid roads?

Also, a stripper GTI is $22k whereas a stripper GT is $26k. If that price different isn't enough to put them in different classes, gas consumption and insurance differences are.

All the more reason to take your own advice and stop breathing.

No, it is about you. It's about you being too dense to recognize the irony in my original post. Did they cover what irony is yet in whatever year of junior high your in?

A base model Mustang with soft springs, skinny tires, and no rear sway bar is a "sport compact"? Yeah, whatever you say kid.

Comparing the base model of one car with the base engine and suspension against two cars that are the performance models of their respective car lines with peformance tuned engines and suspensions is ridiculous and irrelevant.
