Of course, they miss the point entirely.
The Shelby is an expensive dress-up of the Mustang GT.
Even the Bullitt has more performance (at way less than an STI).
The point is how good the Mustang GT is for 25K out the door.
The STI is a great car, and should be for 40K.
Once I get up to that price range though, I can get a lot more out of a Vette for very little extra $$.

I pulled up next to a 2008 WRX at the lights at the highway entrance today.
This is the true price competitor to my GT.
I didn't realize what it was. I actually was thinking ,"Is that the new Scion?"
I started off slow but I was in the mood to lay down some 2nd gear rubber.
Then I noticed he was trying to keep up.( I'm thinking turbo Scion?)
He tried to catch up, but didn't lose too many car lengths to me before I slowed down (less than 10).
He followed me off the highway and pulled up to me at the next light.
"Nice Mustang", He said.
"You've got a nice little car there too", I said.
Then he babbled a little about wishing he could afford an STI.
I assume because that would have given him a chance against my car.
I told him I could afford the Mustang.

Yes, but did you spend less money on yours than a base STI costs? (35K)
A base Mustang GT costs the same or less than most 2008 WRX cars out there.
They go faster and look much better. (The 2008 WRX doesn't look as good as the older ones IMO.)

This debate actually popped up today at work and it was bugging me that they only article I could find comparing a Mustang to a WRX STi was the Shelby GT, which is a great vehicle, but not a straight performance upgrade from the GT. You're also paying for some nastalgia too. I'd love to see two teams given a set budget and see which one outperforms then.
