Classic icon shoot-out: Corvette vs. Cobra 289

http://www.roadandtrack.com/racing/c...-on-track-1963

In full racing trim, both the Cobra and the Corvette would be thoroughly unpleasant to drive down to the office. The hot-cam, fuel-injected Corvette engine rumbles and chuffs smoke at low speeds, and so does the 340-hp (at 6500 rpm), Weber-carbureted racing engine in the Cobra. Clutch and brake pedal pressures in both cars are fierce, and the low-end throttle response is awful. The major sin of the Cobra, in the Corvette booster’s eyes, is that it is a winner, and it is likely to stay one unless a lightweight version of the Corvette is introduced. These cars’ merits as touring machines can be argued, but there is no disputing which is the better racing car. The Cobra’s lightness allows it to accelerate and corner faster, and stop quicker (primarily due to the advantage provided by its disc brakes), and on a straightaway of a likely length, the Cobra will be a good 10 mph faster. Given those points, it is very hard to imagine that any well-prepared, well-driven Cobra will be beaten this year—not by the Corvettes, and possibly not by anyone, unless the organizers get sneaky and push the Cobras over into the same races with all-out racing cars. There are, as a matter of fact, rumors of this happening, and if it does, the Cobras just might beat the big modified cars, too.
