2012 GT vs 2012 Corvette (base) ?
Between the 2, which do you guys think has the edge? And would it be close?? I know the Biggest thing is the vette is 400 lbs lighter. Rated at 430hp but I feel ours is about at tht anyway.
And maybe what about if the GT has a tune?
Should be close..

Many things to consider but as you have pointed out the vette is making around the same power and its lighter. The vette is also more aerodynamic. It may or may not have a gearing advantage as well (unlikely since the MT82 has really steep gearing).
My vote stock for stock goes to the vette if both drivers are competent.

A regular vette is a nice car....for the track. but to drive every day? HELLLLLLLLLL NO! It hurts to
Get into (I'm 19!), the ride.... Oh god the ride is just awful. Every bump you hit rattles your spine, it only seats 2 people, tires are sooo expensive because they are run flats... Around $550 a piece. The interior is kinda lacking quality. (cheap plastic and rattles are abundant)
Heads up display is cool, and the removable top is also cool. The C6 is looking dated.. As it started in 2005.
Cool car, but if your going to buy one, buy a 2006 with 5k miles. They are everywhere and usually in the high 20's in price.

But they are two totally different cars. Mustang is a Muscle Car, and the corvette is a sports car. If you can get past those things, go for the vette. Price wise, you can get a base vette for about $39,000 new.

I take it that you have never actually owned one. Im 52 and have no issues getting in and out, the ride quality is very good, and I have zero rattles.

If you discount the entry price. GM,s LSx engines return some good power for the money. They respond exceptionally well to the full bolt on and tune treatment, upwards of 70+ HP in some cases. Add heads and that number inflates considerably.

The vette goes quicker, stops faster, turns harder and gets better gas mileage while doing it.
There's simply no way around that.
It's purpose built to do those things well, the car doesn't have to compromise anything because of the nature of who buys it and why they buy it.
The Mustang on the other hand does have to make some compromises because it's sold to a much broader audience and includes models that aren't specifically performance oriented.
However, that's not to say the mustang isn't darn good and getting closer to that performance bar.

Currently a Corvette Owner!
I LOVE this discussion, great idea. And great comments from all of the members. IMO:
GT: price advantage (at least $10-$15k new), back seat, better crash ratings, much nicer interior materials and layout, much better seats, more comfortable ride, easier daily-driver, still looks good.
C6: much better suited for track duty right out-of-the-box, faster, better handler, still looks good.
Depends what purpose you're buying the car for...but I love how excellent American performance cars are available from the Big Three, and very good prices. Oh, and I LOVE my GT, saved up a long time for it, and I've always wanted one...I can't afford the Corvette.

Perceptually I think corvette is more for midlife crisis people and retired people and mustang appeals to all generations and widely acknowledged (people say wow that's a good car)

Depends on what your purposes are for the car. I think the Vette would be a better track car, but the Mustang would be a better daily driver, and might actually be more fun on real world streets/conditions due to things like ground clearance, suspension tuning, tire size/availability. The reason I'm going back to the Mustangs is because with the way the roads and weather are here in Colorado, I find myself hardly driving my Vette. Even when I take it out on nice days I really have to baby it everywhere or feel kinda paranoid with the potholes, road debris, steep parking lot entrances etc. that we have in Colorado. With the Mustang I can even find snow tires that will fit it and drive it year round (which I will), whereas my Vette pretty much has to be a garage queen regardless of how much I'd like to drive it. Yes, RWD is definitely doable in the snow as long as you have the right tires and reasonable amount of ground clearance - my Miata is the most fun winter vehicle I've ever had! Plus the Miata taught me that there's more to driving fun than performance numbers on paper.

The Vette is a vastly better performance machine in every measure that counts.
The Mustang is in a different category all together and probably a better bang for the buck.

I thought about a late-model Corvette vs a 2012 Mustang and decided on the Mustang as it's more utilitarian. The last Vette I drove was a brand new 2009 and it rode and handled excellent, so much so that it shocked me. Problem is it gets so much attention that the attention becomes a problem in itself. You can blend in to traffic with the Mustang but not the Corvette. It's no fun being tailed by cops waiting for you to jump on it. Outside of the 5.0 emblem on the side you'd never know the modern Mustang was such a beast. I like that stealthiness, or at least being slightly under the radar.
