The M3 will likely be the better overall car. However, at $60+K it ought to be while the $30+K Stang will certainly be the better performance value.
Now if Ford would ever see fit to release the IRS, it might well become the M3's performance equal regardless of price (performance value rating would go through the stratosphere).

Think we're talking about two different classes of car, certainly. The M3 is awesome, no doubt. The 2011 GT is going to be one hell of a car, but it's not intended to be a premium sport luxury car like the M3.

M3 for sure - the key is balance...MUCH better balanced ride than the Mustang (although the Mustang is my sentimental fav of all time) has a long way to go to match the balance and finish of the M3. I had a 2005 GT, 2007 GT/CS then 2007 GT500 and all great cars - but not even in the same class, (as they shouldn't be given the cost difference), as my 2008 M3 vert. It is truly an amazing machine...the key isn't just luxury or speed or handling or steering feedback/feel...it's the way BMW puts them all together in such a way that the finished car is greater than the sum of it's parts. I'm very excited at how far Ford has come with the Mustang in the past 5 years (and somewhat frustrated it has taken them so long to step up for this automotive icon) and am really excited to check out the new 5.0...but really guys they are not in the same class. Just my subjective opinion, but until you've spent quality time behind the wheel of both cars - you can't really appreciate all the subtle/sublime differences....

Of course they are not in the same class..2 different price points. I priced out the M3 I wanted before the news of the 11GT was confirmed and it was about 69k with what I wanted. However I still had an issue spending that kind of money for a car that wasn't an american car; want to support our own economy then came the '11GT!!
But from a performance standpoint wasn't that '11 GT faster around the track than the 09-10 M3? I forget the track but the link is out on the web.
I think the GT is a helluva deal with the performance that you get, the fit and finish and the quality of the materials for a car between 34-40k fully loaded.
My vote is a GT as that is what I am buying in oct/nov of this year when my lease is up on my current car.
Kudos to Ford for building a world class drivetrain and the exterior to support it!!

Heh, a customer of mine said something pretty funny about BMW - take in mind the guy is a Porsche fanatic (he owns a 911 Turbo and flat out considers a Corvette little more than a muscle car viewing it in the same light as a GT500 - they only go straight and can't turn worth a ****).
I figured he would be a BMW kinda guy (owned an X5), but we were talking the other day and he said he was looking into a new DD and said; "I'm thinking about Audi - BMW done right."

Im coming from a 2005 E46 M3, though we enjoyed it.. but certainly dont miss it one bit :-). Somebody posted above about a comparison. This is a bit dated but you get the point..yes I vote mustang! As for costs of ownership, its easy to lets say to get to 90% which is plenty awesome. Its the last 10%! is when the expenses quadruple imho.
