Why arent there any mustangs in the GT series?
Why arent there any mustangs in the GT series?
Anybody care to explain why mustangs haven't stepped up to the GT series in Grand Am or Pirelli world challenge? The competition in GTS are the likes of tsx, camaros, Kia Optimas, and BMW 3 (non M)

There are people on this board that can answer with some authority, but I will go ahead and take a SWAG. When building a "race car with a license plate" (as per the Boss vaguely claims), it makes more sense to race in a showroom stock type class, rather than in a class where your so-called race car is scrapped and replaced with a tube frame. The GT class is MUCH more expensive and the competition is nut-crushing (and against cars that have been developed in GT for years).
I think it's better when a 302R or 302S wins, because then Ford can say, "See? That's a car off the showroom floor. All we did was add some safety stuff to it." There is some hyperbole to that, but the fact is - anybody can build a 302R or 302S out of a catalog (if you don't just order one from Ford Racing). The list of parts just isn't that long. That gives the Boss real cred and ultimately sells cars for Ford.
Maybe. What do I know?

That's pretty much it. The race cars from Porsche, Bmw et al were never intended to run on the street they were built as true race cars, but the Boss's 302S-R are essentially street cars turned into race cars.

That's pretty much it.......I would just add, that with the added expense of the GT class, prominent/reliable sponsorship is vital. Sponsorship is not easy to come by these days and is probably holding back a few teams that you might otherwise see running in the GT class.
And moving to 'Mustang Motorsports' section, but will leave a link for today . .
I would LOVE a factory backed Mustang effort in ALMS GTE. However, as mentioned above, the development costs would be very high and Ford's seems aligned with efforts in Rolex DP (at least from a Roush-Yates engine program.)
