Anybody care to explain why mustangs haven't stepped up to the GT series in Grand Am or Pirelli world challenge? The competition in GTS are the likes of tsx, camaros, Kia Optimas, and BMW 3 (non M)

There is a Mustang in the GT series of the Grand Am driven I believe by an Earnhardt. Very non-competitive so far.

Btw there is a huge difference between a Porsche cup car , Riley tube framed Camaro and the Boss 302R.

Didn't see that, thanks. Why hasn't ford developed much in the GT class?

There are people on this board that can answer with some authority, but I will go ahead and take a SWAG. When building a "race car with a license plate" (as per the Boss vaguely claims), it makes more sense to race in a showroom stock type class, rather than in a class where your so-called race car is scrapped and replaced with a tube frame. The GT class is MUCH more expensive and the competition is nut-crushing (and against cars that have been developed in GT for years).

I think it's better when a 302R or 302S wins, because then Ford can say, "See? That's a car off the showroom floor. All we did was add some safety stuff to it." There is some hyperbole to that, but the fact is - anybody can build a 302R or 302S out of a catalog (if you don't just order one from Ford Racing). The list of parts just isn't that long. That gives the Boss real cred and ultimately sells cars for Ford.

Maybe. What do I know?

Jimmy

That's pretty much it. The race cars from Porsche, Bmw et al were never intended to run on the street they were built as true race cars, but the Boss's 302S-R are essentially street cars turned into race cars.

That's pretty much it.......I would just add, that with the added expense of the GT class, prominent/reliable sponsorship is vital. Sponsorship is not easy to come by these days and is probably holding back a few teams that you might otherwise see running in the GT class.

While never intended to run on the street the ALMS GTE cars are production based, whereas the Rolex GTs can be production based or have a tube-frame chassis, i.e. the Camaros.

And moving to 'Mustang Motorsports' section, but will leave a link for today . .

I would LOVE a factory backed Mustang effort in ALMS GTE. However, as mentioned above, the development costs would be very high and Ford's seems aligned with efforts in Rolex DP (at least from a Roush-Yates engine program.)

When you say GTE are you talking about the cars from the IMSA Challenge class? Because the GT3 RSR or BMW run by Tom Milner's team are pure bred race cars not production based.

ALMS GTE (or old GT2) cars are production based.

I do relate more with the production cars winning races over the tube chassis cars, but I guess more importantly, why doesn't BMW have any m3's in the gts series then?
