SCCA Solo 2 and my 1965 Mustang Fastback

This weekend were the first 2 races of the season for the
Sacramento SCCA Solo 2 season!
I decided last October to get my car ready to compete in the CAM-T class.
SCCA Solo 2 and my 1965 Mustang Fastback-m1.jpg
Little back ground on the car.
I have had this 1965 Mustang Fastback for almost 12 years now!
I'm the 3rd owner!
Other than the paint everything on this car has been apart rebuilt or modified
in my garage.
Roller camshaft, aluminum headed 302 assembled by me!
T-5 5sd trans, 9" rear axle, 4 wheel disk brakes, rack and pinion steering, and
many, many other mods that I don't want to give out

Saturday was a crazy Rainy day with over and 1" of rain while I was at the track!
And it was my first time in 12 years that my car was out of the garage in the rain, let alone racing it!
I ended up finishing 1st in my class for the day.

Sunday was sunny and beautiful!
So after getting up early to wash my car!
I made my way out to the track.
The track design was changed with a much longer faster straight away!
(2 of them to be exact!)
I found my gear ratio was anything but optimal for the straightaways.
I ended up finishing 3rd on Sunday.

I ended the weekend tied for 1st place in points!
5 more weekends and 10 more races left!

I ordered up a new adjustable camber kit for the car last night.
So she will be going under the knife (welder, grinder) next week.
I need more camber to help in the corners.

I think it's cool that you race the '65. Even better that you win with it.

Congrats on the win, that's awesome!!

So you've been on the forum since 2014, owned this car for 12 years and just now we hear about it?
Car loos amazing, and is clearly fast. Nicely done.

This is more of a modern mustang site, I didn't think many would be interested.
What can I say I'm true mustang guy!
I have 5 at my place right now 3 of them mine 2 that I'm working on for others!
I think I might have a mustang problem!

Yeah, the problem is you don't have enough Mustangs.

Well she came out of surgery (my garage) and better than ever!
I installed a vario centric camber adjusting kit!
Before the most camber I could get out of my set up was -0.7
After installing the kit I have -1.5 and can go up to -1.75 if I feel I need it latter on.
But wow it was a pain to install especially working around my rack and pinion that I put in this car.
A whole lot of grinding, and measuring, with a little welding mixed in!
It should make a big difference in grip around corners, next race is next weekend!

Sweet! That will make a difference in handling. I run my Mustang at -2 and -2.1, and it makes a huge difference in mid corner grip. I'm sure it makes a world of difference in your '65! Good luck!

Did my alignment on a machine tonight!
Got -1.5 camber and 2.9 castor
From -.7 camber and 1.5 castor
The car drives like it is on rails!
Next race this weekend!
And after the points were posted from the first 2 races I'm in first place by myself by the smallest of margins. But I'm where I want to be and the car should do much better with the new set up!

Round 3 and 4 of the Sacramento SCCA Solo 2 were this weekend!

It was a huge autocross course with most cars taking 70-75 sec.
Which for autocross is a giant track!
And they did a great job on it with great technical sections and a very cool fast slalom section!
(Which I was hitting 60+ mph through)

Saturday there were 6 vehicles in my Cam-T class.
(3) 1965-67 mustangs and (1) very cool 1965 falcon, so the Ford flag flew high!
My new front end alignment made huge differences in the way the car handles!
I was able to pilot the car to a 1st in class win on Saturday!

Sunday there 6 vehicles again in the CAM-T class!
(Only 4 out of 6 of the same cars from Saturday)
(more dodge and chevys)
They changed the course slightly and ran it in reverse from the day before.
I had a hard time figuring out my lines around it in reverse but was able to
put together a great final run.
I finished 1st again in class!

So far this season (4) races down (8) to go and
I have (3) first places and (1) third place!
I hope I can keep it up all year!

Had round 5 & 6 this last weekend!
Two more First place wins!
The more I run my little fastback the faster it gets!
Half way through the season and I have 5 First place wins out of six races!

Well been a busy summer I have not had much spare time to post!
My Auto Cross season is over!
After 12 races in the Sacramento SCCA solo2 series.
I ended up with a First place for the season!
I competed in CAM-T class. (classic American muscle traditional)

I ended up with.
(8) First place
(1) Second place
(3) third place

19 Cars competed in my class through out the year, it was a great turn out.
Great competition, very challenging and I learned a lot about pushing my little Fastback!

I also drove my car to and from each race. (No trailer needed, although on some 110+ degree days I wish I had A/C)
A couple of the races were over 210 miles round trip for me.
That's 105 miles to the race, race all day then 105 miles home.
I'm very proud of the reliability of my car!
Also I ran the whole season clean!
( I did not hit 1 cone during a whole season of racing!)

At the last race a very cool guy was nice enough to do some pictures of my car for me!
Thanks Gorilla Photography!
Here are some of the pics!

I hope to see more Mustangs at Auto-X events next year!
