Winter Storage :(

Its that horible time of the year again...winter. I want to leave the stang in the garage and drive my beater car for the winter. I plan on starting up the stang at least once a week. What else should I do? change the oil now?

P.S. sorry if this is a common thread but I couldn't find many using the search.

Change it now and change it again when you take it out in the spring.

Change the oil, put Stabil in the gas tank (and run it for a few miles to get it mixed through the entire fuel system), smart charger on the battery, over-inflate the tires a little, cover it up with a good cover and leave it till spring. I wouldn't start it up unless you plan on running it up to full operating temp. It could cause condensation (and rust) in the engine. I over-inflated my tires last winter because the winter before they went down to about 18lbs by spring.

I change my oil before winter.
I run the car every warm day I can to 100% fully warmed up (not just idle, but no further than the end of the driveway).
I don't change the oil in the spring until I've driven for a month or more.
My last car I had owned for 13 years, was 30 years old when I sold it, still ran like brand new.
I do have a garage that never goes below 40 degrees though.
Winters are for trucks.

I change the oil before storage and then in the late spring before I do any serious driving.

Why do you change the oil before storage? If there's any moisture, it'll stay in the oil.

Oil and water don't stay mixed for long periods. Example; oil based salad dressing at the store is usually separated from sitting on the shelf. Old engine oil also contains acids and carbon buildups.

Doesn't water, acids, and other byproducts tend to emulsify in engine oil due to the additives? Salad dressing doesn't have the same additive package as engine oil.

who says oil and water dont mix, in this case, it was baaaaad...stupid head gasket.

For the storage, Id say change the oil, add a stabilizer, increase the tire pressure, take out the battery (if you're not gonna drive it), add a good car cover and ur done.

Thumbs up

NHstang has it right.
Starting the car once a week is not a good Practice.
In a week the Oil will have drained from the engine to the Oil Pan and you
will be Starting a dry Engine.
If you do start it, run it to full operating Temp to remove any Condensation
that may have formed from the Start Up.

I put the Car away on Oct 31st This Year.

Me and the SporTrac will spend the Winter Together.

My Son Said, that in the Spring I can scare myself again just like it's a New Car.

I installed a battery maintainer so I didn't have to pull it out. I added Fuel Stabil and inflated the tires to 45 psi at 40F.

I may have to go pick up a battery maintainer. Car cover is showing up today, a Covercraft one I bought from American Muscle. It should fit nice and protect very well from what the description says.

Last winter, I washed and waxed it, changed the oil, filled the gas tank, added Stabil and drove it for a few miles, inflated the tires to 40 psi, hooked the battery to a battery tender and put a car cover on it.

Exactly. Wash, wax, cover, battery tender, full tank w/fuel stabilizer, oil change. I am lucky to have a lift to store the car on, else the filling of tires is a good idea.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but isn't it necessary to start and run the car at least once a week, in order to keep the gasket and engine seals lubricated..
