Wax vs. plastic trim question.... what do you do?

It's unavoidable while waxing to not get some on the textured black trim around the windows.

So how do you get the wax out of the black trim around the door windows?
It's not that bad but I want my baby perfect!

I used a little WD 40 to clean it and it worked fairly well. Put it on a rag though as it'll take the wax off your paint but won't hurt the paint. Bug & tar remover works also applied in the same manner. Hope this helps. Kev

I try to get as little wax as possible on the plastic but here is the ultimate solution....

Mothers Back to Black

Use a little bit of that every couple months and you're plastic will shine like new.

I have tried Back to Black, but that just covers it up temporarily. I want to remove it. I'm gonna due a 2nd coat of Maguires Gold Class wax tomorrow.

Right now, I think I'll try the WD40 when I'm done.
Keep the suggestions coming... Thanks!

Welp..I've never tried this but thinking about it wouldn't a nice strong mixture of dawn soap in water work? People are always saying how they wash their car with dawn to take off the old wax so I suspect that would work.

Good Luck, oh and by the way, if you haven't tried it, the best thing to do when waxing your car is tape the trim with blue painters tape.

Use zaino instead of wax - you won't have these problems anymore

A little mineral spirits on a rag will take the wax off plastic trim safely, then put a little protectant on the plastic to restore an even color

for some reason Meguires spray wax doesn't ruin the plastic.

Whenever I get wax on the black trim, I use Meguiar's (NOT "Maguires" or "Meguiar's," BTW) NXT Generation Tech Protect to remove it.

Thanks for all the tips (spelling too)

This is how it went down. After applying a second coat of Meguiar's, I tried a little mineral spirits. That really discolored the trim. Ouch, so I used generous amounts of back-to-black, and she looked great. Then, it rained on Monday.

Woa woa woa....

On 3rd thought, I should have tried the Dawn. That stuff takes the wax off your hand really well. It should do the trick on the car too. After the next wash, I'll try the dawn.

In that case, try Dawn Botanicals.

Here is a little tip for you. Peanut butter will remove wax from the trim. The oils in the peanut butter remove it. Then just wash the car really well to get rid of the peanut butter or your car will be covered in bugs. As far as mineral spirits, as you already found out, I don't recommend using them on trim pieces since discoloration can occur.

As for the comments regarding Zaino. I have used Zaino on my car and ya know something, it did leave some residue on one of my trim pieces. So it is not as perfect as everyone says it is. I personally think it is over-rated.

In that case, which would be best to use - Skippy, Jif or Peter Pan?

I'd say Skippy. I wouldn't let Peter Pan within 10ft of my car

Believe it or not, I use Armour All and it cleans off the wax on my truck's plastic nicely. I use Zaino on the Mustang and it doesn't seem to get stuck in the plastic as much.

When I wax my car with Mequiar's Gold Class Wax, I just carefully apply it about a half inch away from the black trim so there is nothing to clean off the trim. When I buff it off it looks great and no mess. Seems to work for me. Can't see any difference from the waxed/small unwaxed area probably because when buffing it off, I go over both areas with the micro fiber cloth.
