I was looking under my car today and noticed that the back axle and some other parts were starting to rust. The car has not even been in the rain. Any ideas on how to deal with this... I was hoping to to keep the undercarriage in showroom condition?

I would be tempted to use POR-15 as a base, and then put a top coat of their black paint over it. It would be a messy job, but that stuff will last forever.

All my fords axles rusted within months of purchase. Going to treat my Mustang like the rest of them with Rust Encapsulator followed by a top coat.

Good idea,

maybe it would be good to coat the whole bottom of the car with POR 15 or any other high-end paint.

I personally found POR 15 very messy to work with

I see it has been a while since anyone has posted to this topic, but I am noticing a lot of rust on my undercarriage and did a search and found I was not the only one who has this problem. Has anyone undercoated or painted the axle covers and shock mounts? I am looking for ideas. It looks terrible! I only have 2600mi on the GT.

I'd just get a bunch of the spray on rubberized under coating if you are worried about it.

I remember seeing a post about painting the underside recently. Here is the thread.

Hey you guys I had the same issue with the surface rust on the rear end parts. I went and bought a quart of semi-gloss black Rustoleum (SP) from Lowes and painted the parts with a soft brush. It was not messy at all, and now it looks like a new car should. Just an idea and solution.

Thanks Beachboy! I might just do that to mine. I was surprised to find some on mine too.

Indystang it worked really well. Should last a long time, if not you can just reapply down the road. I used very little of the quart of paint

I was just going to reply with what I did. But I didn't have to. I think it is well worth the time.

Beachboy

When I put my mufflers on I noticed the rust and I may now do what you did. Sounds like a nifty solution.

i dunno if any1 thought about this, but try painting the undercairrage w/ linex or rhino linings...usually used in truck beds, but tough, durable, and rust proof

When I bought my convertible, I was offered to have my car rust-proofed, thinking it might have been a good idea now, still might do it. Has anyone had this offered to you, or what is it that they do??

The POR-15 is really good stuff - messy, but like armor. Not cheap either, but is goes on thin and covers well, so a little goes a long way.

Thanks for the info Beachboy. I think the rustoleum idea is great. Did you have to do any sanding or wire brushing before you put it on?

Line-X and Rhino lining would be tough, no doubt. But the weight they would add would be significant. JMO, stick with paint.

02gtstangvert,
I also have a 05 Vert I got on 3/18/05. I had my car Ziebarted. They are a nationwide chain. I believe it is important to rustproof a Vert. Most Verts will rust more easily than a coupe because of the way water can run down your top and entire the back half of the car. It is not cheap. The cost was $699.00 for undercoating, soundproofing and apply paint protection. Might see if there is one in your area.

I bought the 6 pack of por-15 but haven't gotten underneath yet. Waiting for a nice weekend. Will put a good plastic sheet below the car and have lots of gloves to work with and an old sweatshirt. I hear it is very messy but worth the effort. Por-15 and then a topcoat(also provided). I will post some pics of the adventure when I get to it.
