My cousin got in my car with tar  on his shoes. It got in my parchment carpet. Can it be totally removed? How?

Never tried either of these. I've heard that a product called Oops works and I've heard of using WD-40. Try your local Lowe's or Home Depot or maybe Walmart on the Oops.

Dupont Teflon carpet and upholstery cleaner works really well. I got grease off my seat and you can not even tell it was there.

WD-40 works. When my daughter was little, she got tar on the seat of my Dad's truck. He took WD-40, sprayed it down, and then wiped it up and no sign of tar or anything (and they were light tan seats too!). I was very surprised that it didn't even leave a stain from the WD-40.

Be careful and don't rub too hard or you'll wear right through the carpet. If they were high quality, it probably wouldn't be much of an issue

WD-40 did the trick! Thanks, Tom Servo
