im stupid in this area but what are the differences in polishing paint compared to sealing paint? is it the same just called different?
i see companies out there selling paint sealant and others selling polish.
ive always use meguiars paint polish and nothing else....works fine for me, but do not know if paint sealants are something totally different.
can anyone clarify this for me?

Polish is to remove light imperfections in the paint, sealant is to give it a long lasting protective coat, similar to wax.

 

Very good question:
Polishes are fine abrasives that combined with heat from high speed machines can remove scratches and restore that just painted look. Sealants are man made type of waxes that bond with the paint to provide protection from the elements. There are other products that some use in between and after such as conditioners etc too. But that's a looong topic

usually do meguiars clay bar and paint cleaner to prep.
i use meguiars step 2 deep crystal polish or show car glaze #7 with DA polisher....
follow up with Meguiars tech wax 2.0. or gold class ultimate liquid wax / carnuba wax
at least im doing it right.....no need to try the others and mess something up. never had any issues with these before.
