The best ones are the Car Jars from Yankee Candle. If you have to use anything, use one of those. The Clean Cotton smells just like fabric softener, nice and fresh.
I just use those little tiny yankee candles. When I bought my 2000 v6 (used) it always smelled like peaches. After about 5 months I found a peach candle under the drivers seat. I've used candles ever since, and have a granny smith one in my car now.

Don't use the little sprays. They dye and stain cloth and carpet, and leave them stickey.

I've always just tossed a Bounce dryer sheet under each seat. It works great, smells nice and lasts a long time.

The baking soda idea is pretty good Tres, but I wouldn't recommend sprinkling it into your carpet. I'm sure you could get most of it out, but since baking soda is even more fine than sand, I would caution against it. If that stuff worked its way down through the carpet (which it most likely would), you might as well be dumping sand down into your carpet. That'll get between the carpet and the floor boards and scrape and scratch away. Not to mention that Baking Soda has the lovely tendancy to attract moisture, so once it scrapes all of the paint away on the floor boards, you'd have a nice little bare metal spot. Add some moisture, and you've got some rusted floor pans.

I do like the idea of a bin though. That would attract all of the odor. Definately better than just smelly stuff that covers it up. It also helps odors when you clean and vacuum the car regularly.

+1 for Zaino Leather in a Bottle

After using it for 5.5 years on my A4 (since new), people still commented about how it smelled really good and had that new car smell. It's the best car smell in the world, a must for all leather seat owners

I've had this happen before in my GF's truck with the vent mounted liquid freshener. Buy the hanging tree fresheners or another hanging type. They may not last quite as long, but they're cheap and efficient........and don't screw up the car.
I had a hanging tree type melt thru the plastic on the console of my '88 GT. I had it hanging over the gear selector, hangin' off over the passenger side..... melted the plastic.

So, yeah.... buy an air freshener and throw it under the seat.

Everytime you wash your car and vacuum carpet...Just spray a little Febreze on the carpet you will be surprised how long it will last and dosent harm fabrics...

Just dont get crazy with it or spray where direct sunlight can fade it into carpet..

Under mats and around console works fine...much cheaper in long run as well...

I've always just used simple green diluted with water to clean the interior panels on my jeep a few times a year. It leaves behind just a little fresh scent, but not an overpowering oder. Jeep is six years old and smells clean and new. I can't stand any of the perfumey air fresheners.

Febreeze is what I use too... but not on the Stang yet... no real need...

I will say that those micro-fiber towels are AWESOME at picking up the dust without scratching anything... very nice...

I'm staying with the new car scent on mine until next week, when I get my order of Air Spencer CS-X3 Squash.

Finally got my Air Spencer CS-X3 Squash. Even with the vent shut, it's still very strong. And it actually looks good on the dashboard.

It's really hard to describe other than a fresh citrus (not orange, lemon or lime) scent (some translators claim Squash being "lime soda" scent, which makes me believe it's related to Ramune). Other than that, it smells great.

Air Spencer also comes in Citrus, Crystal (some floral scent) and Lime.

An air freshener that's also a toy car? Who woulda thunk?

Wow.
Squash seems to be quite the popular air freshener scent.

At least to those who know about it. I've used Squash air fresheners since I had my old Civic coupe. I figured the CS-X3 would make a great add-on to my Mustang, since it smells great and the casing complements the dashboard without making it look ricey.
