gas = paint remover!

I was filling up my tank, which seems like a daily ritual since i got this car. anyways I overfilled it a little and it spilled inside the tank door there. I get a gas station complementary paper towel and wipe it up. I take a look at the rag afterward and to my horror I see this:

be careful spilling gas, you can see a little bit of redfire on that rag

Ya, unfortunately gas has always been known to make a mess out of paint. Also, if you should happen to spill gas when filling you should wash it off immediately. Do not use a paper towel or a rag since this can damage the paint even more buy scratching the paint as well as removing it (due to rubbing the gas into the paint)

That's strange... maybe what you caught was someoverspray that wasn't covered with clear...
Typically I wouldn't think gas would strip paint like that. :scratch:

I filled up the other day, and the cut-off didn't work early enough and spilled gas all over. I went right over to the spray wash next building over, and sprayed the heck out of it...... BTW, I work security at the shipping port here in Longview, and our patrol car is in the shop all week, and was informed that all patrol security will be paid an extra $3.00 per hour using their personal vehicles......and I'm on patrol all week in my flashy red stang.

I suspect that you have waxed your car, and the mechanical abrasion left a residue of your paint color in the wax. The gas immediately dissolved the wax, and you can see the paint in that wax residue.

I guess you can only go 16 miles per hour to break even... while on patrol? :notnice:

Wierd. I actually used gas to take off the remains of the dealer's sticker that was under the 3rd light. It left an outline of adhesive that looked horrible. I decided to take a chance and the gas worked like a charm. I washed it off with water afterwards and had no problem with the paint whatsoever.
Not the smartest decision I know. It worked though.
