Accdiental Discovery & Microfiber Question

I desperately needed to give the girl a wash so yesterday I got up at 6:00 AM and got the ball rolling. After the wash, I was unable to completely dry the body - especially the windows - something about the dew point, maybe? I thought it was a lost cause but after the sun came up it was just spotless!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue with microfiber: I was using some microfiber towels that I had washed a few weeks ago and noticed that little particles such as sawdust and tobacco (I roll my own) were sticking and quite a task to remove, like peeling Velcro apart. I ran them on "air dry" for about 20 minutes but it didn't seem to help much. I manually removed the offending debris but then I started thinking - what other debris might be in there?

Should I just buy new ones as needed or is there a special way to wash them? I do not use fabric softner and not much liquid detergent - I'm finding conflicting methods out there.

Thanks,

What kind of detergent do you use? I wash my micro fibers with plain liquid tide and bleach (2 rinse option) then tumble dry. No fabric softener and no dryer sheets. I've had the issue you mention one time, but that was a result of the wife washing them using scented soap and using fabric softener and/or dryer sheets.

I have found no real benefit to microfiber, and lately I've just been going to Kmart or Walmart and bought some cheap cotton bath towels. They work well, leave very little lint once washed a few times, and cost less than Microfiber.

If you get stuff in them you pretty much have to throw them away - or use them for rags on other things - to avoid swirls in your finish.

I use a sharpie and write a letter in the corner to differentiate - I use a separate one for finish, for jambs, for wheels, for engine, and an X for 'don't use on the car anymore!' lol When the finish one gets old it gets bumped to jambs and all the others get bumped down the line.

Washing w/LIQUID soap (not powder, no softener, not washed with any other items) helps keep them clean, but won't remove fine grit.

Seems like mine never get the finish completely dry, but what little is left quickly evaps and leaves a spotless finish.

I usually use Gain HE and I don't know if it is scented but I will check. I thought bleach would ruin them by making them brittle and running the colors.

Its not like they're mad-expensive, but I wash her weekly and using them once and buying more will add up - I dont have a huge need for rags that I can't supply with old laundry.

I got a big bag at Costco pretty reasonable with like 25 so that's why I labelled some for different functions and to always keep a fresh one for the finish to avoid swirls.

i have a lil crazy method of cleaning microfiber, and i do notice some particles such as leaves and such do come off during the soaking process. I soak the towels in a concoction of dawn, purple power degreaser, and hot water. I let them soak over night, then i do a hot rinse and ring out the towels. i then do a hot wash with regular tide, followed by two rinse cycles, then dry on high in the dryer. the towels are like new, i buy new ones from BJ's but haven't opened the package yet, actually have a batch soaking now

Everything I've ever heard is to NOT dry microfiber towels (with heat).

Its not reccommended but you can do it. It just cuts the life and quality of the micro in half. I usually let them hang dry in the sun or wring them out aftr washing them and put them in the dryer for 30min on the "air dry" setting

So basically a microfiber towel is like a condom.

Good to know.

A sergeant from the French Foreign Legion goes into the pharmacist and places a used, beat-up condom on the counter. He asks, "How much to replace it?" the pharmacist replies "10 Francs." The sergeant leaves. He returns one week later with the same condom and asks "How much to repair it?"; pharmacist replies "5 Francs." Again the sergeant departs. One more week goes by and he returns, places the condom on the counter and says, "the troops voted to repair it"
