. Just get something good on gas and good for haulin friends around. Old honda. Volva, VW should be good.

The real answer is: No current Mustang, and no car over, oh, 150HP, or less than 2.5 tons.

Tell that to the '82 GMC truck that ran into my '66 TBird, tboning me.
I drove home, no problem. Couldn't open the door, but that was fixed later, on his nickel. And the car needed nothing more than the quarter panel and a doner door to fix it. It was otherwise intact, and sound. And neither I nor the passenger, with our lap belts and nothing else, were harmed.
The truck was on a wrecker, my TBird killed it dead. DEAD. But the driver was fine, so there's that.

That same Tbird, 2 years later, was used as a stand in for a Dukes of Hazzard attempt over a local railway, my brother was borrowing it. He jumped over the tracks which were on a hill, clearing the tracks, landing on a parking lot curb, sliding about half on/off the road, swerved across the two lane road to the left, and then really lost control and slid 100 feet *sideways* in a beautiful arc, smashing against a curb sideways, hopping it, sliding through the lawn sideways still, digging up majestic curving ruts in the grass, and winding up in a drive way as if he'd meant to park it there. At night.

That thing did NOT roll. All passengers (there were 2 others I think) incurred NOT ONE SCRATCH. The Tbird took the brunt of the forces, flattening all four tires, turning the front right one into an abstract Pac-Man, denting another, losing all four hubcaps, and every panel of the car had chips in the paint. Oh yeah, all four ball joints were shattered in the event too.
But nobody, NOBODY was hurt by that amazing chain of events.
I stand by my statement: Tanks are good. The Tbird is a Tank.
Oh, and it got fixed, painted eventually, and last I heard, was *still* running around somewhere. The thing will not die. I call it Christine.
Now, not as safe? Um... ok... I suppose... Only in that it has no shoulder belts, and the dash is padded in name only. A front end hit will definitely ruin your day. But that's about it, you otherwise can't easily hurt yourself in the tank, if that rampage says anything, and if rammed, it's a hell of a 'pad'.
To be sure, no car is 'safe' if driven incorrectly. That includes not seeing other idiots, as well as not seeing yourself being an idiot. All cars can and do kill, all of them, if handled badly.
/amazed, to this day, about the General Lee thing my brother pulled off. It was astounding they survived, and the car stayed upright.

point/points taken I wish you had video tape of that jump. I agree I put some of my older cars through hell also.
I was thinking about a video I seen a while back where a newer car I think it was a chevy ran head on into an older impalla. I'll see if I can find it on youtube when I get home.

Oh, re: video of the jump? *I* wish I had that. All I saw was the aftermath, complete with ruts and other evidence telling the story. It looked soooo epic. Even though it temporarily trashed my car... seeing it would have been totally amazing.
